There are several varieties of modern area rugs such as accent, bright, chic, metro etc. Accent rugs are best suited for select areas like the kitchen, bath or any other suitable room. The bright rugs use contrasting bold colors that add life to any room. The chic rugs use hues of varying colors, well blended into each other. Metro rugs are paler in color and like all the other varieties, tend to use geometric patterns in them.

Popular colors and patterns used

One of the most popular colors used in modern area rugs is maroon red or wine color. Varying textures are used for highlighted effects. Even blue, seagreen, pale grey, beige, blue etc are commonly used. Vibrant organic detailing and abstract prints seem to be the popular choices for these kinds of rugs. Warm earthy tones flatter any interior which already has enough highlight areas. These lend neutral tones and do not overpower the room. Florescent colors and overlapping patterns maybe used for more youth-oriented themes - for example for kids rooms and teenagers’ rooms. For modern furniture that has clean and simple lines, modern area rugs with kaleidoscopic or elliptical designs in black and white or other contrasting colors are best suited.

Select shapes for specific areas

Depending on the area you wish to highlight, you may choose the shape of the rug. Many of the popular modern area rugs use oval or round shapes for the center table in the living room. Even colors used are contrasting, with concentric circles or bold patterns being used. You can use these trendy rugs to highlight a select piece of furniture or highlight a certain area of the room. For example, if you have a classic, antique vase from China, you may want to use a stylish round modern rug that has contrasting colors or graphical prints on it.

Why lighting is also important

Modern area rugs are predominantly used to highlight certain areas or sections of the room. This will only work best if complemented with suitable lighting. Factors such as the position of the doors or windows make a lot of difference in accentuating an area. For example, if you wish to highlight a table kept near the window, you would want the light to fall onto the rug beneath the table. This applies during the daytime. However during the night dim lighting or overhead lamps placed at strategic locations, can do wonders to highlight a section.

Theme of the room

Modern rugs are great only if they align well with the central theme of the room. For a room that has mostly white color in it – white walls, white lace curtains etc., it makes sense to have a rug with pastel shades. For a more adventurous look, however, bright contrasting shades may be used.
