Looking through the years at different American furniture designers, you will find a few who stand out. Milo Baughman was one; he liked to design modern furniture and was around the second half of the 20th century. Milo's designs were thought to be very advanced in thinking and progressive.
Another person to look at is Marcel Breuer; he was a Hungarian born modern designer born in 1902. He liked to combine art and technology in his designs. How about Wendell Castle, who is said to be the father of art furniture, born in the 1930's in Kansas.
Another American furniture designer is Eliphalet Chapin who was born in 1741, and stuck to mostly cabinet making and some furniture. How about Philippe Cramer who was born in 1972 and started the design company of Cramer & Cramer, and his own brand Philippe Cramer in 2001? Or D.J. DePree who worked with Tin and honored his father by naming his company after him; Herman Miller. Then there are Charles and Ray Eames who worked in several areas including industrial design, furniture design, and architecture to name a few.
How about William Penhallow Henderson who was born in 1877, who besides furniture design was a painter and an architect. You also have Florence Knoll who studied under Mies van der Rohe and designed furniture and was also involved in architecture. These are only a few of the greats in American Furniture design. You can do a full search and get a list that has everyone who's been active in American furniture design, and know exactly what they have contributed to the design of modern day furniture in the United States.
How about Duncan Phyfe who was one of the leading 19th Century furniture makers? At the age of 16 he was an apprentice for a cabinetmaker.
He became well known for selling furniture at a very low price. Or Sam Maloof, who was born in 1916. He was a furniture designer and maker. Go online and see some of his fantastic rockers.
Samuel Loomis is another name in American furniture designers.
He lived and made his furniture in Connecticut, and was most noted for making the Colchester/Norwich style of furniture. Alexander Roux is another name you should know. He was trained in France, but immigrated to the United States in the 1830's, and he opened a new shop in New York and sold a bunch of furniture. He is known to introduce steam powered saws as a way of building furniture.
As you can see there are tons of names of people who have touched American furniture designing at least a bit in their life, and this list isn't even the full list of people who have somehow touched the way that today's furniture looks and how it's built. Some of the stories are very interesting and it's neat to know how people have affected the look of American furniture design.
