Color trends run in roughly ten year cycles. Back in the 1980's green and peach or pink with mauve and gray were hot. By the 1990's the green got paired with jewel tones and then the earth tones became all the rage. How do you invest in a color scheme that won't go out of style right away.
The trick to choosing your colors for your home is to be on the cutting edge of the trend so that you can insure yourself that by the time the color is out of style, the furniture is usually worn out as well.
Certain basics never go out of style. Natural colored leather(brown, camel and black)are standards. Neutral colors with inexpensive accessories can allow you to invest in the pieces you want to keep over time, but freshen up by changing the paint on the walls, a few pillows or artwork and the entire look is new.
At Barbara English Designs, www.barbaraenglishdesigns.com we always recommend that you do not remodel or build anything into your home that would be a nightmare to change when it goes out of style. This goes for tile accents in bathrooms or kitchens. A natural color for your hard surfaces can be blended with wall colors for a change, whereas pink inserts are hard to work around later.
Remember that by the time thirty years rolls around, what was old is new again. The colors of the sixties and seventies have made a comback. The rule of thumb is that if you are old enough to live with it the first time, you will not want it the second time around. Younger people will gravitate toward trends that are largely unfamiliar to them because it seems fresh. As we get older, disposable acquisitions seem useless and classics are the trend. Invest in colors that will last or play with new colors if there is not a major investment involved or if you really don't care if you will be overhauling your look later.
The reason things go in and out of style is largely run by designers of all kinds. Being in the business and working with styles and colors more than the average person, we get sick of things a lot quicker...so we are looking for something new and that drives the market.
