Air conditioners can be a blessed relief during a sweltering summer; however, this relief may come at a substantial increase in utility bills. Therefore, it is important that air conditioners be properly maintained and kept in good working order.
One of the reasons that an air conditioning unit does not work properly is most often the simplest one: the filters are dirty. They should be cleaned and/or changed on a regular basis. Most companies recommend changing replaceable filters every three months. Permanently installed filters can be vacuumed or dusted as needed.
Doors to rooms that are not often used can remain closed, so that the remaining rooms will receive more cooled air. One may wish to close the vent off in the unused room, opening it only when necessary.
The best operating temperature for an air conditioning system is between 76 and 78 degrees F. Each degree lower costs approximately 15% more.
The compressor should not be placed to where it will be in or exposed to direct sunlight. The space around the unit should be kept clear for maximum performance.
Close blinds and curtains in the summer to help keep the house cooler. The air conditioner will not have to work so hard.
Vent openings (or louvers) should be pointed up or horizontally. This will allow the air conditioner to cool more efficiently.
The system should be used only when needed. If windows can be opened at night, that may be a good option, rather than using the air conditioner to cool the house while everyone is sleeping.
The fans on the air conditioning unit should be operated at maximum speed. In this way, more cooled air will be circulated.
Air conditioning should receive regularly scheduled maintenance service. This will prevent any problems that may arise when the unit is used for the first time after the winter season.
