The majority of modern boilers are of the highly efficient ‘condensing’ variety, which use an extra heat exchanging element to conserve heat by capturing the condensation produced by the act of burning gas in a boiler. This type of design reduces energy consumption by over 10%, while still providing the same levels of heat that older designs can produce. Most boilers that are more than ten years old are not going to be nearly as energy efficient as newer models. If it’s older than fifteen years old, then the chances are that it’s costing you more in wasted fuel than you are saving by not buying a newer, more fuel efficient model. A newer model could also save you money on costly boiler repair. Since April 2005, all new boilers installed in the UK have had to measure up to strict new energy efficiency standards, making the high efficiency condenser boiler the most common type of new boiler installation in the UK almost overnight.   The flexibility and accuracy of modern controls allows you to make a few changes to your energy consumption without necessarily feeling the cold For example, by reducing the average temperature of the home by just one degree Celsius, you can save up to a tenth off your annual energy bill. The more control that you have over your heating, the more money you can save by avoiding wasting energy, for example by heating empty rooms, or heating the house while you are out.
