Joe Gilmer – Ex-Student and now a recently Qualified AAT Accountant
In my student days I spent the majority of the long summer break working at my Aunt’s Pub, The Red Lion, an establishment serving fine beers and traditional bar meals. It quickly became clear to me that if you own a catering business or public house, one of the best things you can ever buy is an Electric Fly Killer.
Q1 – Why was an Electric Fly Killer needed?
Well, as it became hotter during the summer months, the fly situation became a huge problem. As I am sure you are aware, the Pub at the time was not as hygienic as it could and should have been.
As flies carry bacteria, the kitchen staff had to constantly prevent them from landing on the food being prepared.
Also, as the Pub was not air conditioned, doors and windows had to be opened to keep the customers cool. As well as letting fresh air in, unfortunately this also allowed more flies to enter the Pub.
It became a major problem for the customers in that the flies were interrupting them whilst eating their meals.
A few weeks into my job, I realised that some customers were starting to use their beer mats in an unusual way. Instead of resting their drinks on the mats, they were using them to cover the top of their glasses to protect their drinks from flies. After witnessing this, I mentioned the problem to my Aunt and suggested she should buy an Electric Fly Killer. She agreed with me and purchased one the next day.
Q2 – How do they work?
Most modern Electric Fly Killers use an Ultraviolet Light which attracts insects to it. There are two wire mesh grids separated by a tiny gap, about the same size as a typical insect. When the insect is lured towards this, it enters the gap and completes the electrical circuit. The insect is then vaporized by the electricity, killing it instantly.
Q3 – Was the Electric Fly Killer beneficial?
Oh Yes! - More customers were coming into the Pub, and more of them were staying in for longer. The Pub was now “fly free” which, especially in summer, helped make my Aunt’s Pub be more attractive to customers than the other Pubs nearby without an Electric Fly Killer. Well, would you rather sit in a Pub or a Restaurant with flies, or without flies?
The hygiene of the food also improved. The kitchen staff could concentrate on preparing the food, rather than preventing flies landing on it. The customers could eat their meals in peace. My Aunt received positive feedback about buying the Electric Fly Killer, as well as some negative comments for not doing it sooner!
Q4 – Ok, I’m convinced, but how much do they cost?
It depends on the size and quality of the one you choose. There is an Electric Fly Killer for every budget. The prices vary between £20 and £250. My Aunt decided to choose a medium costing, durable and safe model that provided efficient insect control at an affordable price. Buy one yourself and see the results!
