Durability Of Floor Tiles

Attesting to the durability of floor tiles, a visit to the ancient Roman ruins in Pompeii will reveal the long surviving tiled floors of thousands of years ago.

If the floor tiles of the ancient Romans are still around today then this must be some kind of indicator as to the durability of tiled floors.

Admittedly, modern life is not as hectic or rough and tumble as it was back in Ancient Rome, although if you have kids and/or a dog, I’m sure you’ll agree, the margin is pretty close. You have the kids running around after the dog with their shoes on. The dog trying to escape, digging her claws in to get round corners tightly. Dinner time for the kids means feeding the floor as much food as the kids get, and if the dog is a puppy, walking round without shoes on guarantees you a mild case of trench foot. All of this takes it toil on an inferior carpeted floor.

One solution would be to cover your floor in polished wood. Looks nice doesn’t it? Don’t let the dog on it though, it will resemble a lions scratching post in a day, and the dog, trying to get away from the kids, has just slid into the TV stand and been crushed underneath your now useless 40" plasma TV. She now looks like the satellite dish which you have no use for.

It’s times like these we need to start thinking like the Romans, they were onto something. A tiled floor can be the answer to your prayers, as it was to theirs.

You can march a thousand Romans over a tiled floor without it ever feeling the effects, the only indicators that they were even there are a few muddy footprints on the tiles.... which can be washed off with great ease in a couple of seconds.

A clean looking basic tiled floor can be achieved very cheaply and you can install this yourself with a bit of direction and the right tools for the job. Tiles can start at as little as 9p, though you will be paying more for tiles made from natural stone like marble, granite or limestone.

The adventurous may want to try a mosaic floor. Made of hundreds of tiny tiles, mosaic floors are the ultimate in tiled flooring. You could create a patterned floor design or for the ultimate in extravagance how about tiling a photorealistic image of your face onto the floor, just to remind your friends that it is your house.
Tiling a floor these days is a lot easier than it was c. 500BC. You can just pop down to your local Topps, pick up a few boxes of floor tiles and some tile adhesive for the job at hand and get cracking.
