A deck is a fantastic way to extend the living space of a home. For most people, a deck provides an attractive outdoor area that can be enjoyed by family and friends every time the weather allows. The key to a functioning and satisfactory deck is a well-designed deck. With the proper design, a deck can quickly become a favorite part of your home. However, before you can build the perfect deck you must be able to understand deck design and the planning considerations. Knowing the way it all works will help your deck become a successful project.
One of the first things that you need to carefully plan out is where your deck should be located. Good deck design involves strategically placing your deck in an area where it can unite with the environment of your backyard without being obtrusive and highly noticeable. Make sure to take advantage of great scenic views. Also, pay attention to where the sun falls in your backyard. Perhaps you want your deck in a shady area or maybe a sunny southern exposure suits your needs more. Furthermore, take your privacy concerns seriously. If privacy is important to you then try and place your deck away from near-by neighbors and consider the use of shrubbery, walls or fences to resolve the problem.
The next major consideration involves which part of the house you will connect your deck at. If you are thinking about placing your deck near the living room, take into account where people will be watching TV. Sometimes it is not such a good idea to place a deck right next to an area in your house where people are trying to watch TV. Views will be obstructed as people pass by to get outside to the deck and soil will be dragged into the carpeted area of your living room from outside. To avoid such problems, consider placing your deck next to the kitchen to make it easier to move food and dishes back and forth. It will also be eaiser to clean up soil will on a kitchen floor. Lastly, consider having two doors accessing the deck. This will be the most efficient and best solution for easy foot traffic flow.
An alternative to having your deck connected to your house is to have it built in a place all by itself, detached from your house. If you decide to take this route, make the best of your backyard and whatever views it has to offer. If you have a backyard that extends to woods then try locating the deck near some beautiful trees. If you have a pool, pond, or lake on your property build your deck to compliment your water views. If you don't have a backyard to put a deck in, consider building a roof deck to extend your living space. Keep in mind, if you want, you can divide your deck into different areas.
Once you have a good idea of where you plan to build your deck, take the time to think about how you will be using it. Consider the size of your property and how often you will be able to entertain guests on your deck. If your property is small and can not accommodate to large groups, then you probably won't need a huge deck. The size of your deck should be in proportion to the size of your house and the size of your family. Furthermore, if you plan on using your deck for multiple purposes then perhaps a divided deck would work best for you. With a divided design, you could designate certain areas of your deck to particular activities such as kids play area, dinning, tanning, etc.
The shape of your deck is another important aspect. There are a variety of shapes to choose from. The best design trick is to keep the shape simple, while also adding an angle or two to spice up the deck design. Adding curves or diagonal lines to connect two rectangular or square spaces is a very appealing technique for a deck design. Use paths, paving surfaces, stairways, arbors, gazebos or even a water pond to connect the different sections.
One of your last considerations is whether or not to hire a deck designer for your project. The alternative to hiring a professional is to use deck plans or design the deck yourself. If you happen to find deck plans that you really like, then by all means use them. In fact, using deck plans that have been successfully built before is a great way to know whether or not they will work for you. You can also make modifications to the deck plans to suit your needs more. Make sure to check with your local building department to find out what requirements and restrictions exist in your area. This is especially important for those of you that are designing and building the deck yourself. If you are uncomfortable with the deck design process, consider hiring a professional deck designer and a deck contractor.
