Epoxy Coatings and Stains Can Transform Concrete Floors Into Artistic Masterpieces

More and more homeowners and businesses are creating that warm, easy-to-live-in feeling by taking advantage of their facilities' largest single surface, their floor. They are using new materials, including artistic stains, to give their concrete floors great individualized looks as well as the easy maintenance qualities of a Class III laboratory.

A recent example is provided by a project Durall Industrial Flooring undertook for John Engstrom Photography (www.engstromphotography.com) near Minneapolis, Minnesota. The goal of the flooring redevelopment work was to enhance the coffee house atmosphere of the photo studio.

Before the development began, Durall created a custom kit of materials tailored for this specific project. The first step was to use Durall's adhesive remover to remove the glue that remained from the carpeting and tile that formerly covered the warehouse-type facility floor. Because cement is so porous, even floors that look almost free of glue will yield great quantities of adhesive under the leaching action of the chemical removers, preventing future interference with the bonding of the new coatings.

A high-alkaline cleaner was then applied using a rotary scrubber with a stiff nilo grit brush. The high-alkaline degreaser brings the pH of the floor up to nearly 12 as it removes the leftover adhesive and contaminants. Following up with another scrubbing using Dura Klean, an acidic cleaner with water softeners, detergents, and rinse agents, shocks the floor with a pH of 3.5, thereby forcing contaminants and vulnerable cement particles to release from the floor. The acidic cleaner also opens the floor up, allowing the epoxy top coats to create a strong, long-lasting bond. A final scrub rinse and drying left the floor ready to accept repairs and artistic coloring.

The new look for the studio floors was produced using black and red stains shot downward with weed sprayers to give an alternating color look. Before staining began, masking tape was used to simulate a grid pattern, holding stain off mock grout lines. The pattern was laid diagonally across the floor to heighten dimension and interest. Two people, two sprayers, two colors—but just one artist—as the red was laid with the artist's eye and the helper followed, filling in unsprayed areas with black. Once dry, the tape was removed and two top coats of clear, flat catalyst epoxy were applied, leaving a soft, non-glare surface that is easy to keep clean and lets light softly dissipate.

The resulting floor brings together beautifully the grand wood, soft leather, and natural greenery of a studio that is functional, easy to keep up, and comfortable for those long hours of artistic development.

I assume that there are two types of organisations ...
By: drabsv | 18-06-2008
I assume that there are two types of organisations according to the relation structure-people:(1) organisations which expect employees to adapt to their rules, roles and conditions of work. If there are not enough candidates, these organisations react by either increasing salaries or by coercing people to work there through various mechansims - manipulating unemployment rate (e.g. outsourcing work to overpopulated Asia, letting immigrants in); mandatory labour service/ military service; etc. In brief: "the individual must fit into the system". An example of a policy of such organisation: "working time is set Monday till Friday, from 8 am till 5 p.m".(2) organisations which create their rules, roles and work habitats with the human in mind, from the very outset; they also maintain feedback loops to change (improve) those rules, roles and conditions for work when necessary. In brief: "the individual must fit to the system and system must fit to the individual".An example of a policy of such organisation: "the working day is 8 hours; standard working time is set Monday till Friday, from 8 am till 5 p.m but you can arrange with our managers a different schedule, convenient to you". If my assumption is correct, any examples of type (2) organisations?

How to Fill Expansion Joints in Concrete Floors for a Smooth Easy-to-clean Surface
By: Durall Industrial Flooring | 13/04/2008 | Project Management
Expansion joints are put in floors to prevent cracks that might develop as a result of the shrinkage which occurs as concrete cures. The joints are trawled into the floor or sometimes cut after the floor is hard enough to walk on. As the concrete shrinks, these joints themselves often develop cracks that go clear through to the sand or gravel base below. Attempting to fill these cracks with a liquid can result in the liquid leaking out the bottom leaving the joint open again.

Filling Expansion Joints on Concrete Floors for a Smooth, Easy to Clean Finish

Repairing Bubbles and Craters in Epoxy and Urethane Floors
By: Durall Industrial Flooring | 14/12/2006 | Home Improvement
Bubbles and craters in newly installed concrete floor coatings often come from gases flowing through the porous cement. These gases can be argon, methane, or whatever is under the slab. Sometimes the gases come from chemical reactions still being produced by the preparatory floor cleaning process. Often the gases derive from air being sucked into the room by the heating system or by natural airflow. We describe here a simple, effective solution for repairing these defects.

Rid Basements of Mold and Mildew With Epoxy Encapsulation
By: Durall Industrial Flooring | 06/10/2006 | Health
Many older homes and buildings have developed dangerous levels of spores from mold and mildew growing in basement walls and floors. To be free of those health hazards and to avoid them returning encapsulation is being used more and more frequently. Plaster and lath, cement block, poured cement footings and other basement surfaces often get wet or damp. The microscopic cavities in many basement wall and floor surfaces become a natural place for spores to grow. Those odors and heavy air you breath when in some basement areas can now be made fresh and kept that way. The trick is to kill the growth and then seal the pores so that even if wet there is no place for contaminants to grow. Think of a plastic picnic plate. The plastic air dries quickly and there is no place for growths to hide.
