Although a fireplace grate may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to your fireplace, it is an important piece to having a warm, satisfying fire. Since not all fireplace grates are the same, let's take a look at the differences and discover which grate may be your best choice.

While it's true that a grate helps your wood burn better in your fireplace, it can also help in improving the amount of heat that is cycled out into your home. In fact, the amount can be as high as 20%.

You can find a wide variety of grates for fireplaces. There are literally hundreds of various sizes, styles and designs to choose from.

when choosing your grate, you should be sure to get the right size. You want the grate to sit with 3-5" of room between the base of the firebox and the actual fire.

Next, determine the width you will need so that the grate will fit.

Finally, you can then add your personal tastes to the mix. You will find styles and patterns with curls and whimsical patterns, as well as thinner bars, etc.

Fireplace grates are also available in different colors that can be matched to any room decor.

A fireplace grate doesn't have to be boring. It can be functional as well as stylish. Just use your imagination and take your time. You will find the perfect solution to add a special touch to your homes fireplace.

Excavation; how to estimate for concrete?
By: bLeSStimator | 04-08-2008
How to estimate the excavation for concrete footings (or slabs, sidewalks, etc.)? In other words, let's say you have a 2ft. wide by 1ft high spread footing, at a min. of 3ft. below grade; let's also say the foundation wall is 12 inches wide by 2.5ft. high. running the length of the footing. My question is, how much excavation do you figure given these dimensions, or any dimensions for that matter? Do you automatically figure to dig down to the depth of the bottom of the footing? How wide do you figure the dig will be (past the width of the footing)? At what depth must you start to slope in from the side when digging to prevent cave-in's?

WaterLeaksinWall

We had a roof collapse in January of this year. For a year previously we knew we had a leak in the roof that water was coming through. Now that the roof has been fixed around May of this year we are experiencing a problem with our flooring (the cheap floorboards under the carpet are buckling). We have been told since no apparent pipes under the house are leaking it may have come from the water that was in trapped the walls. Even though there are no apparent stains on the walls and the flooring has never been wet is there any way to find out just how many areas there were leaks in the walls? We are aware of one large area and suspect that because we now have a snagging ceiling in another part of the house that the water may have traveled there and down the walls. Is there any way to actually test to see just what walls were affected by the water damage from the roof? Any advice as to what our options are that will enable us to pinpoint exactly what areas within the walls the water traveled would be greatly appreciated, as we have been told so many different expensive options we are unsure how to precede.
