How to Deal With Rusty Metal Tools

Every handyman knows that having your own tools is a must-have in every household. It is not only convenient to have your own tools but it is also cost-effective. Having to repair something on your own with a set of personal tools would not only save money but it would also save you from the time that you can spend from bringing that damaged stuff of yours to the repair shop.

Well, for you to be able to do all these repairing, you first must have a complete set of good tools. And for you to experience the maximum functionality of these tools, you have to really take care of them. Proper maintenance is very important as these can lengthen the life of your equipment.

And what will be the number 1 enemy of your tools, especially if they are made of metal? RUST! It is very hard to get rid of especially if it had been on the metal surface or any other surface for quite some time. Though moisture is the main factor encouraging rust formation, its absence still cannot fully assure a rust-free equipment.

The rusting process is a chemical reaction that progresses little by little so that early detection of rust is easy. Rust always manifests itself as reddish to brownish discoloration. If you see this appearance to one of your tools, it is important to get rid of them as soon as possible!

How can we possible take care of our tools? Proper maintenance is the key. Below are simple steps in which you can preserve your metal tools:

1. Proper Cleaning After Use - This includes washing them and wiping them dry. Soap can mechanically wash away dirt but washing with water alone may work just as fine so long that large dirt particles are removed. Remember that dirt may initialize the rusting process and may speed-up the chemical reaction as well. Do not forget to dry the items. Moisture is very critical in the rusting process and this is the only factor that acts directly on the chemical reaction. It is important to note that moisture serves as the catalyst for the reaction to happen. SO always keep your tools dry.

2. Proper Storage - It would be good if you store your tools separately according to functions or components. Do not just let your tools lying all over the place. Proper storage also implies keeping your tools in a well ventilated away where moisture is less likely to form. Some would suggest having it stored in a vacuum but that would not be practical! A place where proper air circulation is ensured would do.

3. Rust Removal Products - If in any case you just couldn't prevent the spread of rust, it would be best to use a rust removal product. They really do their jobs quite efficiently in that they act effectively but safely - that is, it is really safe to use and does not, in any way, poses a certain risk to your health. This particular brand called Rusterizer will do the job for you without you having to worry about certain health hazards.
