You spend the majority of your time at home in your bedroom. It is a room dedicated to rejuvenation and renewal. People spend time in their bedroom not just because it is a place to rest at the end of a long day, but because it is a place of comfort and security. Whether you are reading in bed, writing letters, or getting dressed for a night on the town, your bedroom is your most personal space where you can let your guard down.
The most important element of your bedroom is, of course, your bed. Whether you're in it asleep or enjoying other activities, it needs to be the height of comfort. Opinions vary widely about what makes the ultimate bed. Some people prefer a soft mattress while others prefer one that is firm. Some people prefer a bed low to the ground with minimalist design, and others love a bed that is tall and grand with ornate posts and exquisite linens. Whatever your style, do plenty of research on your mattress because this single piece of furniture can have a huge impact on the quality of the rest of your life. A good night's sleep is one of the keys to good health, so choose wisely!
Other elements to a great room include adequate storage for clothing. Nothing ruins the aesthetics of a perfectly good bedroom than piles of clothes and shoes lying around. Make sure you have plenty of storage to put your things away, including a spot for laundry, shoes, and toiletries. In some houses closet space is at a premium, so an armoire or bureau that coordinates with your room may be necessary to accommodate your wardrobe.
You may love to watch late night television shows before going to sleep, but a television isn't always the most attractive item and may actually clash with your room if you decorate with classic style and antiques. Consider a cabinet with doors that can be closed when the television isn't in use. This is a great alternative to having your television stick out like an eyesore amidst your fine décor.
Another important element to your bedroom is lighting. You may want to consider a few alternatives to the basic overhead light fixture which is functional but offers little ambience. There are literally hundreds of thousands of gorgeous lamps that can accentuate the décor of your bedroom and coordinate with your bedding or curtains, providing soft and gentle light that will make relaxing in your room much easier. You can also buy a small book light if you are the type who enjoys reading in bed long after your partner is asleep. For a romantic touch, consider candles in a variety of safe and beautiful designs.
Your bedroom décor can be soft and floral-inspired, or modern and sleek, but regardless of what you choose, it should be a reflection of the things you really love. As you settle in to bed each night and look around, your room should give you plenty of reasons to have restful sleep and sweet dreams.
