Excavation; how to estimate for concrete?
By: bLeSStimator | 04-08-2008
How to estimate the excavation for concrete footings (or slabs, sidewalks, etc.)? In other words, let's say you have a 2ft. wide by 1ft high spread footing, at a min. of 3ft. below grade; let's also say the foundation wall is 12 inches wide by 2.5ft. high. running the length of the footing. My question is, how much excavation do you figure given these dimensions, or any dimensions for that matter? Do you automatically figure to dig down to the depth of the bottom of the footing? How wide do you figure the dig will be (past the width of the footing)? At what depth must you start to slope in from the side when digging to prevent cave-in's?

Why can't I legally occupy my shed? I received a ...
By: b4nshee44 | 02-08-2008
Why can't I legally occupy my shed? I received a letter from my local code enforcement (Lake County CA) saying I was in violation of code by having my shed "occupied", aka, as a bedroom. This "shed" is about 194 square feet and is literally like a detached bedroom in every way. We're talking concrete foundation, electrical wiring/outlets, light switches windows, insulation, etc etc, and yet I'm told I can't sleep in it... So I have a few questions. For starters, how can they possibly tell me I can't occupy this room? IS there anything I can do to get a permit or something that will allow me to occupy this so called "shed"? And more importantly, what EXACTLY classifies occupancy? I mean, it's a shed/workshop. I have a desk/chair/computer in there. If I get rid of the bed and don't sleep in there, will they somehow tell me I can't have a desk/computer in my own shed? Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone knows a good free site for asking technical code/law questions I would much appreciate that.

Hot Tub Surround
By: Mickey D | 25-07-2008
Hello, can anyone give some suggestions as to what types of material I can use in constructing an outdoor hot tub surround? The old one is junk and needs to go. The surround will not be visible for the hot tub is going underground so looks don't matter, just want a sturdy construction and of course weatherproof and cheap if possible without losing the necessary strength.
