The chair is thousands of years old, but, it originally started off as a stool that the Egyptians and Greeks of ancient times added a back to. If ever a piece of furniture was enslaved to its owner, it would have to be the chair. It is developed to always be able to withstand a heavy load, and it must be stylish.

Move the chair, in order to see if it wobbles when you release it. For an all wooden piece, it is important that all the wood is matched, and that the grains are in the same direction. Carefully inspect the finish to make sure that it is smooth and clear. Quality construction pieces do not use nails, therefore, you should find only screws. A chair must be well proportioned, so that it does not tip over backwards easily.

Chairs that are completely upholstered require more knowledge. Sit down and check for comfort. There are many things that go into a high quality upholstered chair: the cushion, the batting, the springs, the weaving, and much more that we don't get to see. For instance, more expensive pieces have springs that are hand tied. They also usually have piping that adds years to the life of the chair.
