Micro Generation – Combined Heat and Power Generation

Micro CHP is a device which generates electrical energy and heating simultaneously at domestic or shall commercial building level in accordance with the ESB network's definition.

Micro Combined heat and power generation system (aka CHP or cogeneration ) if operated on natural gas provides very high energy efficiencies. The generated low voltage electrical power can be used to supplement the home electrical energy supply which is generally about 27% to 35% of the total home energy usage. But by far the reason people are over enthusiastic about CHP s is its ability to generate large amounts of thermal energy usable for space heating. In reality this is the waste product of the electrical power generation process through the operation of a heat engine. The production of electricity in CHP s is secondary in a micro generation system.

Thermal energy for space heating

Space heating utilizing the waste heat of CHP s has been demonstrated to increase the fuel efficiency of Micro Generation up to 90%. The CHP units use the thermal energy wasted under normal conditions in conventional power generation units for space heating. Every kwh produced by Irish grid is said to generate 600 kg of CO 2 gas. Use of natural gas and biomass in micro CHPs will reduce the green house gas emissions while improving the carbon foot print.

Heat engines and energy efficiency

Heat engines by it's very nature produce only about 35% useful work. Balance energy content of the fuel is simply wasted away during operation. In most applications this will be as low grade hot water. The fuel being invariably a non renewable fossil fuel (such as natural gas, propane, diesel, petrol etc.) wastage of 65% or so is not conductive for good home economy and also the carbon foot print of the house, if the purpose is to generate electrical energy. The heat recovery of the waste heat through heat exchangers enables it to be utilized for space heating and hot water. This raises the power generation systems efficiency level to about 90%. It so happens therefore in micro CHP s used in domestic and small commercial applications the heating needs govern the generation of electricity if 85 to 90 % efficiency is aimed at.

Low Grade waste Heat for Home Heating

In a micro CHP units the hot water thus generated will be used for space heating, which constitutes the biggest portion of home energy usage during the colder seasons. The electricity generation is secondary in the system as at best it would be equivalent to about 35% of the energy stored in the fuel. The electricity generated will be in excess of the home's requirement in the heating seasons while in the hot seasons when you really need electricity (but not heating) it will be in short supply.

If you are in Ireland

  • ESB network is the authority to be applied for a connection of Grid tied low voltage Micro CHP generation system. There is also a prescribed procedure to notify the ESB Network after completion. They also have laid down specific regulations and practices for the provision of connection to the grid mains.
  • While as at today there are no companies buying back exported Micro CHP units generated power SEI and CER expects to register several soon.
  • The existing kwh meter of your home can be used as it is there are other additional components required. But the newly made available Smart Meter will do away with many loose components all of which is integrated in to one single unit.

Thinking of Purchasing Wicker Furniture?

By: Alex Sarovschli | 22/12/2009
Many of us may wonder, what exactly is wicker furniture. Wicker has been around for a very long time. In fact it has been around since the Victorian times. Wicker itself can be made from many materials including rattan, bamboo, and willow. When the branches of the wood are woven...

U- Values of Materials

By: John Mahoney | 10/12/2009 | Home Improvement
In its simplest form a U-Value gives you the rate of heat loss through a material. In nature heat, like all energy types, has the tendency to flow from denser to less dense medium through any material it can find, i.e. glass, wall bricks and even air. All it needs to is to transfer itself to less energized molecules of the material.

House Insulation

By: John Mahoney | 10/12/2009 | Home Improvement
If you are one of those paying more than necessary to heat or cool your house you may consider insulation for your house. A well-insulated house is like dressing appropriately for the weather.

House Insulation Tips

By: John Mahoney | 09/12/2009 | Home Improvement
In a poorly insulated house 30% of the energy generated can be lost through walls, roof, floor, pipes, windows and air leakages. To prevent this loss adequate insulation should be applied where necessary.

Home energy audit

By: John Mahoney | 09/12/2009 | Home Improvement
A home energy audit is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An audit will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time. During the audit, you can pinpoint where your house is losing energy.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

By: John Mahoney | 09/12/2009 | Home Improvement
An air-source heat pump ia a way to supply efficient heating and cooling, particularly in warmer climates. An air-source heat pump can deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. This is made possible because a heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel, i.e. your boiler or stove.

Under Floor Heating

By: John Mahoney | 09/12/2009 | Home Improvement
With an under floor heating system, the floor itself becomes the heat emitter which warms the room from the floor up, unlike radiators which run from a central heating system where they are mounted on a wall and the room is heated from the ceiling downwards.
