New Home Vs Renovating Existing Property

In life, change is inevitable and this largely applies to your family and everyday living.  With change in lifestyle comes the need for some adjustments in your home and the big question that daunts many homeowners—should we stay and renovate or move?  Either way, as this ordeal is both an emotional and financial decision, it is important that you give things a lot of thought.  Which will benefit the entire household and your New York home depends on many factors, most of which are personal.  To help you out, here are the pros and cons of buying a new home and renovating your existing property ideal whether you are in Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Long Island or Manhattan.

Buying a New Home

One of the most crucial moves you have to take before even deciding whether buying a new home is the best choice for you and your family is to have your property value assessed.  In most cases, when homeowners decide to purchase another house they would have to sell their current property first.  What they get out of the deal will cover moving, temporary living and buying costs with all the miscellaneous expenses in between.  With housing costs still depressed, your best chance at gaining profit is by getting a new property that offers smaller area or lower value.

Getting a new home would mean starting a new life—with a whole new set of people around you and posing a different way of doing things.  This would also mean being homeless for some time while having to go through the ups and downs of negations, getting outbidded or not pursuing a deal, until finally getting the house that you think offers the most value for your money.  When buying, consider the intangibles:

  • Convenience of getting to school and work,
  • A neighborhood that is safe,
  • Neighbors that are pleasant,

Renovating Existing Property

Renovating your existing property poses a different set of pros and cons.  When undertaking any remodeling project, expect to shed off a good amount of money.  But the costs will surely pay off as you are investing not only on your family’s quality of living.  If given much thought, the project could even pay back some of what you have invested by boosting property value.

While renovating existing property, disturbance to the household are unavoidable.  But if you plan the project right—prepare the family on what to expect as well as create a schedule with contractors that is most ideal, you can lessen the inconveniences posed by the ongoing remodeling project.

But of course, there are certain issues that renovating existing property cannot solve.  If you are faced with such, this would be the ideal time to weigh the pros and cons of buying versus remodeling.  Some of these problems include:

  • The need for more property area,
  • Available essential amenities near your location, and
  • Neighborhood,

The decision is highly personal and the choice will all depend on how the benefits will complement with the needs and lifestyle of the family.  Whether you finally decide to buy a new home or renovate existing property, what is important is you are financially and emotionally ready to tackle what the decision entails.
