Sharon V Chapman provides consumer information on Teragren Bamboo Flooring for A1 Bamboo Flooring - your online guide to bamboo floors.
Teragren is a bamboo flooring distributor that does much more than distribute flooring, they also manufacture it and offer the best customer service in the market. Simply put, Teragren starts in the bamboo fields and follows their product through to the customer’s installation.
The Bamboo Field
Teragren’s quality control processes don’t start during the manufacturing of their bamboo flooring. They go all the way to the beginning of the process to the bamboo field.
In order to insure that Teragren bamboo floorings are consistently strong and durable, they use only bamboo that they have designated as Optimum 5.5 Moso. This species of bamboo is known for its durability and strength due to the density of its fibers.
Optimum 5.5 Moso grows in the Zhejiang and Jianxi provinces of China where it is not harvested until it reaches maturity, approximately 5-6 years old. This insistence on consistency and durability in the bamboo assures a consistency in the durability of Teragren bamboo floors.
The Manufacturing Process
From the culling, cooking and caramelizing, each step of the process in manufacturing Teragren bamboo for their floors is carefully planned not only to produce the best possible product in terms of durability but to also be environmentally aware during the processes.
This includes steps such as using the shavings from planning the stalks to fire the kilns to using environmentally friendly adhesives; Teragren seeks to add to the natural ‘green’ aspect of using bamboo. These steps have made Teregren floors a LEED certified product, qualifying homes built with Teragren bamboo floors for LEED credits.
Finish First
Teragren realizes that the finish on a floor is its first line of protection against scratching, denting, marring and other damages. That is why all Teragren bamboo floors have a 7-Layer German Finish.
In keeping with being environmentally friendly, this finish is water-based and solvent free, a product created by the Klump Coatings of Germany. This process of using seven layers of finish create a finished product that is not only durable but also easy to refinish when necessary, though with a 25-year warranty it is doubtful that refinishing will be necessary.
Moisturizing
Bamboo is naturally a moisture resistant floor however; the main key to preventing moisture issues such as warping is to acclimate the wood planks before they are installed. Teragren products are designed and produced to arrive on the job site with six to nine percent moisture content.
Teragren takes extra steps in their manufacturing process to insure that their floor is stable and ready to be acclimated on the job site.
All slats are kiln dried before the final laminations process and then stored in a humidity controlled storage area for at least two weeks before the milling process.
The final step is up to the installer, Teragren flooring should be allowed to acclimate to the room it will be stored in for twenty-four hours before installation.
Teragren bamboo floors are not just the best choice in bamboo flooring but they should be the only choice for bamboo flooring if the floor is going to be long lasting and durable.
