When choosing a window box, it is essential that you have all the information in front of you. First, there are many materials to choose from: wood, vinyl, PVC, fiberglass, aluminum, and iron, copper and to name a few.
Wooden windows are the old standard, which for centuries and are an affordable solution to window box planting and gardening. The advantages are that they can be painted; they can be custom made and are often affordable. The disadvantages are that the average wood window box lasts 3-5 years and usually shows signs of decay after only 2 years. They require a lining and they are vulnerable to bursting, warping, fading, peeling, moisture and insects. The perfect choice for a wooden window is a box of cedar or cypress. Both woods have the ability to resist decay and allow the window box last longer than other woods.
Vinyl windows are an alternative to wood rot which is a seamless window. Vinyl resistant to moisture, but, vinyl windows are generally not accept the painting, have a shiny appearance, and are made from two thin-walled material that can crack over time. Vinyl is an excellent choice for someone who wants a no rot planters who must be white and lives in an environment where the temperature changes are minimal. Although vinyl windows are not ideal to support heavy loads, they are lightweight and easy to install and many small boxes can be easily cut for a window with media accessories. Vinyl has many advantages over wood and is an affordable solution without rotting in the window box planting.
PVC windows are an upgrade over vinyl in that they are made from solid a material which make them more durable and prevents them from splitting, cracking or distortion over time. In addition, PVC windows are also free of moisture and rot. Unlike vinyl, they have the ability to readily accept paint and they have a matte finish to prevent those who research such as plastic. In fact, they often look like wood, after being painted. The disadvantages are that they are heavier than vinyl and can cost more on average.
Fiberglass offers numerous advantages planters PVC windows as they do not rot and are resistant to moisture. The benefits of fiberglass windows are that they are available in sizes and can be painted as well. The disadvantages are that they are generally heavier, the limited availability and expensive of all options. They may be more difficult to install, especially for large boxes. Then, it leads to aluminum, wrought iron, copper and window boxes. Aluminum is an upgrade over wrought-iron as it can be sprayed black to resemble iron, but will never rust.
