Shopping for Power Tools: Corded or Cordless?

There's one major thing that you should think about when shopping for a new power tool like a saw or drill. That's whether to get a corded or cordless model. There are pluses and minuses to both types. Here's a few things to consider before you hit the hardware store.

Most people are interested in cordless models first. There are a lot of immediate benefits to having a cordless power tool. The big one is of course, not having a cord to deal with. Sometimes it can be hard to find a place to plug into as all of the available sockets will be taken. With a cordless model you have the freedom to move around. This is fantastic if you are doing several home improvement jobs at the same time. You don't have to keep plugging and unplugging the cord when moving between inside and outside jobs.

Cordless tools also have a few downsides. Charging the battery is a major complaint. It takes several hours to recharge a cordless battery pack. Unless you plan ahead, this can put a wrinkle in you home fix it plans. Also, battery packs tend to lose capacity over time and eventually won't hold a decent charge. When looking at cordless tools, you should factor in the price of spare batteries.

Not having to deal with battery packs is the biggest advantage of corded power tools. You'll always have full power every time you plug them in. Corded tools are also usually less expensive than their cordless counterparts. If you are only planning to do projects inside or near power outlets, a corded model may suit your needs.
