Simple Tips for Cleaning Carpet Stains

Getting a stain on your carpet can be frustrating for the simple fact that it seems that whatever you try it just won’t come all the way out. The reason for this may be what you are trying to use to clean said stain and how you are doing it because there are certain household cleaners that will do more damage then good if you aren’t paying attention.

If you’re attempting to remove a spot do you know which type of liquid detergent is best? And how about blotting? Do you know if it’s better to work your outward from the center or inward from the edges? Knowing simple things like these can make a big difference in stain removal.

Below you will find the answer to these questions along with more tips to cleaning those pesky carpet stains. If you keep the following items on hand you’ll be prepared for whatever gets spilled on your carpet.

1. A see through clear liquid detergent. Non-clear liquid detergents will leave a residue on your carpet that that attracts dirt.

2. A spot remover that cuts through grease. You can buy this at just about any store.

3. Ammonia – Mix one tablespoon per one cup of water. Do not use this mixture on wool.

4. Nail polish remover – The non oily kind.

5. White vinegar – Mixed one part vinegar to one part water.

6. Club soda.

7. White paper towels or cotton towels.

Once you have your stain cleaning supplies together it’s time to look at the proper way to clean a stain.

The first thing to do is blot up as much of the spill as possible using your white paper towels or cloths. Blot inward as you do this which will keep the stain from growing bigger. Once you’ve soaked up as much of the stain as you can use one of the stain removers from above on the spot. Rinse with as little water as possible and then stack paper towels or cotton cloths on top. Weigh these down with some books and let sit for 24 hours.

You can also extend the life of your carpet by using small entry rugs or walk-off matting at all entryways into your house. This will collect dirt and other refuse before it gets tracked on your carpeting.
