The Old Fashioned Charm Of Amish Furniture

There are several qualities that make Amish made furniture unique and desirable: The fact that it is not mass produced gives each piece of furniture an exclusivity seeing how no two pieces of furniture are ever exactly alike. Further, Amish furniture is always made from solid wood, never from particle board, fiber-board, or pressed wood. Generally hard wearing and long lasting hard wood is used, such as maple, oak, cherry etc.

Another thing that imparts a distinctive quality to Amish furniture is the fact that the designs are always timeless classics that never go out of style. Also the Amish use very distinctive joinery for making their furniture which makes it very resistant to breakage and makes it last practically forever! Techniques such as mortise and tenon joinery is used to this end. Also there are some items of old fashioned and charming Amish made furniture that lend a whimsical individuality to your home with their uniqueness.

Take for instance the goat wagons that certain Amish craftsmen still make based on the early German construction. These can not only be an interesting focal point of a garden or a unique decorative element for the indoors, it can also be a very functional object which can be used for moving logs to the fireplace, carrying fresh produce from the kitchen garden to the kitchen, or even for taking out the garbage!

Amish made furniture also includes items such as the classic porch swing, which is something that simply spells quality family leisure time. A beautiful wooden slatted porch swing that seats two or more people is just a wonderful place for the family to get together and spend some time together.

Then there are the unique gliders that the Amish make, a single or a two seater which facilitates a wonderful back and forth gliding action, much like a rocking chair; only smoother. Such a glider could be an ideal addition to a porch or patio, or sun room or any room of the house really! One can curl up with a favorite book, a dear one or even rock the baby to sleep on one of these!

Then there is the very popular saddle rack stand; and no matter if you don’t have a horse or two, it can be used for a variety of different purposes to keep a lot of stuff organized. Traditional wagon wheels are another design accessory for people who have a country western kind of decor theme. A wagon wheel is also an interesting collectible or may be used as decor element or fashioned into a table or similar.

Amish furniture also includes whimsical and amusing items such as bird feeders of butterfly houses, bird boxes which can add just the right touch to your garden or porch. The different kinds of baskets that the Amish make are also a delightful addition to a home; from their fruit baskets, to pie carriers to egg baskets and many others. Amish quilts and quilted wall hangings are also popular design accents for the home as are rugs and barn stars.
