Thinking Of a Career In Plumbing?

Thinking of a career in plumbing? Plumbers fulfil an essential role in society. There is no doubt that wherever we go and decide to settle, a plumber at some point or another, will become handy. Plumbing is a luxury that we should not take for granted, after all, how would our lives be without the luxury of a hot bath or central heating? Well be prepared for a rewarding career path as you will be responsible for contributing to the comfortable, hygienic and safe environments in which we live in.

If you are the kind of person that enjoys working with your hands, and don't mind getting down and dirty, then plumbing could be the exciting career for you. Plumbing is a sector that pays well and offers great long term prospects. A plumber is always needed, and it is unlikely that some technological advancement will replace the need for a plumber. Plumbing plays an important role in the house, and it is unfathomable to think about living in a home without plumbing.

Some of the tasks you will be doing as a plumber will involve some of the following:

repairing hot and cold water systems

fitting tanks and pipework

ensuring that various gas and oil appliances are installed correctly

making sure that domestic appliances such as showers are repaired and installed correctly

The types of qualities and attributes a plumber will need

You need to be prepared to get your hands dirty, and have the attitude of wanting to do the job right. An aptitude for math will be necessary as you will be dealing with numbers and you need to be good with using your hands. Of course as with any job there will be some drawbacks, as in plumbing you will need to be prepared to work in cramped conditions at times, and have the stamina to do physical work day after day. You will have to be a quick learner as you will be using tools and other forms of equipment on a daily basis. As well as having the essential physical skills, you will need to have good people skills too, as your profession requires you to be communicating with people on a regular basis. You will have to be respectful of other people's properties and uphold good standards of work. All of this will lead to incredible job satisfaction and rewarding long-term prospects for your future career.

What qualification  do you need  become a plumber?

It is recommended that you  follow the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) route or the  (SNVQ in Scotland). You will mostly be doing  theory and practical work in the classroom/purpose built training facility and work based experience with a working plumber.  Most colleges help students find a work placement, although many students organise it themselves.

There are a wide range of programs out there that can cater for you,  and it is up to you to decide which course will be most suited to you. If you simply just wish to learn a few plumbing skills then you may wish to enrol on a short course.  On the other hand, a longer program would suit you more if you wish to make a long term career out of it.
