Some homeowners do not know the difference between a home remodeling project and a home addition. A home remodeling project will make subtle changes to the interior or exterior of the home, and home additions are major building projects that require considerable time, materials and work to accomplish. A home remodeling project could be finished in one day with the right team, but a home addition might take a month if the right working conditions are present.

Some home remodeling projects might require the services of an architectural design specialist first. The homeowner might be planning a kitchen-remodeling project but wants to revamp the kitchen space and move things about to gain better use of the space. The architectural design specialist can draw up several plans and show the homeowner where home appliances can be placed and the placement of wiring, vents, and other mechanisms to ensure that the project complies with building codes.

Once the plans for the building project are finalized, the contractor can give the homeowner a fair estimate of what the project will cost and the homeowner will know how long the project will take. Many homeowners will change the countertops from wood to granite and the support system must be sturdy enough to handle the extra weight. Additions such as this will drive up the cost of any home remodeling project but knowing all facts will keep the contractor from having to redo work.

Home remodeling projects are completed in stages and some areas of the home will be completed before others. A homeowner that selects hardwood floors can expect to workers busy toward the end of the project because all work activities will run the chance of the floors becoming scratched and useless. If the homeowner prefers to use various styles of tile throughout the home, the contractor might assign a sub-contractor to the project and use another to add the final additions such as baseboards, doorway bars or entryways into the home.

Some home remodeling projects such as decks will need to be staged very carefully. The homeowner might want to landscape the yard and have a pool built before the deck design is mapped out to create a backyard with a custom look to it. The deck will require posts that are cemented into the ground, and the concrete that is poured for the pool area will have to be sculpted around these obstacles.

Some window installations cannot be accomplished until decks and porches are finished. Many homeowners select doorways with triple glass frames that will require special handling and placement by the building contractor. Some room additions might require a customized doorway that leads to another space. Coordinating the placement of doors is crucial because some will be on load bearing walls that might cause aluminum doors to bend.

A homeowner will have to be explicit about all home improvement needs in order for the project to be professionally finished. The homeowner can identify electrical projects, painting, plumbing, woodworking needs on a simple sheet of paper. The plans for room additions can be drawn on any type of paper and the professional building contractor will take the information, develop a building plan, and go from there. Knowing the type of home remodeling that is needed will allow the contractor to quote a price and once hired, get started as soon as possible.
