A mattress pad is an essential for your bed for many reasons but is often overlooked. They have many different purposes that include:
- protecting your mattress
- providing extra comfort and softness
- helping to keep the sheets on the bed
Different mattress pads are constructed with different materials. Here is what you need to know about the different methods of construction:
- Fabric Content: Mattress pads that are made with 100% cotton provide much more comfort and durability then the cotton/polyester blends.
- Thread Count: This represents the number of threads per square inch of fabric. The higher the thread count, the better the quality of the mattress pad. A high thread count of a good quality yarn will greatly help with resistance to wear and tear.
- Fill: Most mattress pads are filled with a polyester fill. The thicker the fill, the more cushioning there is for you. Some people love the down-alternative fills which are made with really fine gel fibers. They provide extra support and great comfort.
The choice in mattress pads is really a personal choice. Some people prefer the comfort of the molded foam mattress covers while others love the feather bed mattress toppers. Whether you go for a synthetic fiber or a natural fiber is completely a comfort choice. Sometimes allergies need to be considered as well and if allergies are a factor then you will want to look at the hypoallergenic mattress pads.
Most people prefer a mattress pad that can easily be thrown in the wash and put in the dryer. A mattress pad or topper will greatly help to extend the life of your mattress. Some mattress pads are for hygiene well others are for increased softness and others still will provide extra back and joint support. There are even some mattress pads that will provide extra heat or coolness if necessary which can be a great way of conserving energy and keeping either warm and toasty at night or cooling off from night sweats. Before you purchase a new mattress cover decide what need you want to fill and then do a little research for the right one.
