Vinyl and aluminum gutters are the two most common materials used for residential gutter installations in the United States. In fact, some estimate that aluminum gutters make up for 80% of the gutters in the U.S. This may not be the fact for much longer as vinyl gutters are quickly replacing the choice of homeowners. Vinyl and aluminum gutters save similar benefits: Both don’t rust and have a great color selection. They are also both affordable with aluminum running between $4-$8 per linear foot and vinyl; about $3-$5 per linear foot. Both types also do not require painting.
Some of the differences:
1) Durability- Aluminum gutters are very durable but can dent easily. Vinyl gutters are also very durable but have the added element of being able to resist dents and scratches and also conceals them very well in case they do occur. In some cases, vinyl gutters could, (in extreme situations) break apart. Extreme weather or heavy rain could also cause warping or for the gutter to bend. This is really for areas where there is frequent extreme weather. If your home is surrounded by trees with large branches then you may want to stay away from aluminum gutters as branches could cause the gutters to dent.
2) Installation- Vinyl gutters are known for there ease of installation. In fact nay homeowners even make it into a DIY (do-it-yourself) project. The gutters pieces come in sections and they just need to be installed. Aluminum gutters come as a seamless gutters option meaning they are continuous around your home, i.e. without the seams as one would have with vinyl gutters.
