Your Property or Your Neighbors – Get that Property Survey

Do you have a neighbor that is griping about where you put that fence? Maybe they planted a tree line that seems to be on your property? Well, take this advice – call a sueveying company and order Property survey. This will help solve all your problems, will map your property and will allow you and your neighbor to have peace once again restored.

Don’t think that you can just imagine or make up where your property line resides. These things need to be officially established. Regardless if it is your neighbor or you building the fence or wall, make sure you take the legal routes to get these things documented. The last thing you want is a very expensive lawsuit with a neighbor who used to be your best friend. Call the property surveyor!

Another thing you need to remember is that it is not the business of the person doing your project to have the survey done for you. If you have decided to put in a new fence, it is your responsibility to make sure it is being put on your property. If you tell your fence builder to put the fence in a certain area the fence builder will put it exactly in that spot. Take the time to make sure you are telling them to put it somewhere that you actually own – for your sake and for the sake of your neighbor.

Another reason why people should get a property survey is to know where their land begins and ends. While the economy is struggling now and house prices are down in the dumps, they will not stay this way forever. Thus, knowing exactly where your property lines are can help you to know the actual value. That could mean the difference between thousands of dollars when it comes to selling.

Less and less people are getting property surveys. It could be that people don’t care as much as they used to or that they simply don’t know they should get a survey. I’ll admit that while looking for my first house a land survey did not even cross my mind. I’m sure that my friends who recently purchased a house with land did not get a survey done and they aren’t thinking about getting one done either. Do people simply wait until or if they have a disagreement with their neighbors? Maybe – or, maybe they just wait and see if they have a project to do and then they get a survey to verify their land boundaries. I would never recommend waiting until the argument with the neighbors begins. Stay on good terms with your neighbors so that you can look out for one another.

Getting a land survey can be an important part of owning a home. Knowing exactly where your land boundaries are is essential and important. Not only is it good sense to know about your property lines and have proper documentation regarding those lines, but it is important to follow the rules when undertaking a new project such as a fence or new driveway. Take the time to get a property survey so that you are following the rules and so that you don’t annoy your neighbors when you begin to build.
