When it comes to habits bad and good, chances are you’re probably pretty on top of things with your children.
You tell your children to avoid bad habits throughout their lives. Thumb sucking, nail biting and gum smacking – these are topics with which most parents fight when children are young. As children grow, other bad habits come of issue, including swearing, drinking and smoking. These vices become a bit tougher to combat as peer pressure sets in. Nevertheless, you do your best to keep bad habits at bay.
Likewise, you try to encourage good behavior and virtue in every day life. You practice together daily habits like teeth brushing, bathing and shutting off lights when leaving a room. You point out the importance of saying “please” and “thank you,” and talk about habits such as writing thank you cards, organizing desks and eating healthy.
In summary, as parents we do the best that we can to ensure that the personal habits, practices and routines of our children are in tip-top shape. Nevertheless, we may fail to concentrate on the habits they develop in certain areas of life – namely, that of home security.
Staying safe at home requires a certain level of attention to customs and habits. And while you may be extra careful when it comes to home security, chances are that your child is not. How can you break your child’s bad habits and instill new ones? Practice, practice, practice.
Take some time out to speak with your child about the importance of home security. Set ground rules regarding houseguests, especially in the case of teenagers who still lack in a sense of what hanging out with the “right crowd” means. Let your children know that doors should remain locked at all times and that it is okay not to let a stranger in. Explain how your home security system works and when it should be used, and go over emergency procedures. It can be hard to get your child’s attention, but it is not impossible.
The conversation about home security, however, is not a one-time deal. And as much as you may hate to be a nag, sometimes healthy reminders are necessary. If you’ve noticed that your daughter has left the back door wide open, ask her to come back and close it. This may not make you the most popular person in the house for a while, but you can bet she won’t forget again. Ask about new friends, and don’t be afraid to supervise a bit. Talk to your kids about what they remember of you’re emergency plan talk, and go over any points they may have forgotten. There is no need to be overbearing. This topic, however, is one that cannot go away.
Home security habits, good and bad, cannot be left out of the dialogue you have with your children. And while it may not be the most pleasant topic, it is an important one that requires the same amount of attention eating vegetables and looking both ways before crossing the street.
