When it comes to securing your property here are some home security tips you can take for yourself to make your home a safer place for you and your family.
Outside the home you can check that all the windows and doors are in good condition and that they close and lock properly. Locks and keys should be regularly maintained and operate as intended. You need to have the keys for them as well, as sometimes they can go missing.
Walls, hedges and fences should be regularly maintained and kept in good condition ,with no obvious signs of decay or neglect. Don't leave garden tools around as they could be stolen ,or they could be used to harm you or your property.
As you look round your property from the outside what you are looking for is any obvious signs of security weakness, such as rotting window frames. Put yourself in the shoes of the person who might want to break into your property and imagine the kind of weaknesses he or she might be looking for as an opportunity to break in for some easy pickings. Don't make it easy for thieves, make it difficult.
If you don't have one, an outside security light is a good idea. You can buy one with a movement sensor, so that it only activates when it detects body movement or body heat. An outside security light is also a useful addition for your own convenience. If you like barbecues, for example, fading natural light isn't a problem with one of these. Or if you have a pet which you let out at night you can see where he or she is from the inside of your property.
If you have a grass lawn, and are away on holiday in the summer months, you might want to make sure you mow it before you leave home. You want to leave as few clues as possible as to your absence from home. You want to make it appear your property is occupied all the time.
Inside the home you can become more security conscious by leaving a light on while you are out, and the radio as well if you prefer, so it appears someone is at home. Both of these simple precautions are highly effective in deterring potential burglaries and they cost you nothing.
Don't leave your curtains drawn while you are away on holiday. Arrange for a neighbour or someone you trust to come in and open them during daylight hours. It pays to be friendly with your neighbours as they will often volunteer to keep an eye on your property for you if you tell them you are going to be away from home for a while.
Should you invest in a home burglar alarm? Probably not straight away, though its up to you. All it takes is a few simple precautions which will probably be enough to deter most intruders.

Adjustable Picnic Table Plans - A Better Alternative To Fixed Picnic Tables?
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | FurnitureWe live in a community where most of the children know each other, and they play together at weekends. We noticed last summer that one of the kids who came round regularly said their parents had not got an adjustable picnic table, similar to ours, so we thought we would make one for them as a present. They could use it when the weather gets warmer.
Outdoor Pergola Plans
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | LandscapingOutdoor pergolas look good in a garden, and form an attractive and functional use as well. They are pleasing to the eye. My wife was skimming through numerous garden magazines this summer, trying to get some ideas of how she wanted our garden to look. We have a large garden, so she thought an outdoor pergola would look good somewhere in the garden, but she was not quite sure where. I agreed, and suggested we look for a set of outdoor pergola plans.

Build a Shed Roof - Looking at the Options
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | RemodelingWhen the time comes to build a roof for your shed, there are a few options available to you. I am assuming in this article, that the shed which needs a roof is made out of wood. You can have the traditional shed roof which reaches its highest point down the centre of the construction, or you could have a sloping roof. One which slopes from a high point on one side of the shed.
Free Large Dog House Plans - Looking For Ideas
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | PetsSome years ago, one of our near neighbours bought a dog, and soon afterwards it became clear to me that it lived outside all year round. At the time I thought the idea of having a pet dog live outdoors was a little callous. It is a debatable point with dog owners, I know.
Wood Shed Kits - Getting More Storage Space
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | RemodelingWood shed kits are an ideal way to expand your storage space in the backyard. Wood is a good choice of material to use, as metal is subject to rusting and vinyl can be expensive. Vinyl also tends not to look so good as a wooden structure, in my opinion. There are a few considerations to think about before laying out your hard earned money in buying one of these.
Dog Kennel Plans - Off The Shelf Or Build it Yourself?
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | PetsOur daughter has been nagging us or some months now about having a dog as a pet. She likes animals, and anyway, lots of her school friends have pet dogs so why shouldn't she have one? As a parent, you probably know this is the question which finally seals the deal in the kids eyes. From that point, you have to go and get yourself a dog as a pet.
Kids Picnic Table Plans - Making It Happen
By: Philip | 22/12/2009 | DIYMe and my wife have talked about having a kids picnic table in our garden for so long now, it has almost become an embarrassment for me whenever she raises the topic in conversation. The fact is, and you might have guessed already, that I have not yet done anything about building one of these. They do not look too difficult to build from the plans I have seen, so I thought I would have a go at constructing one myself.
