Draught proofing or draughts – what do you want in your home? Of course, when losing heat through draughts in your home costs you expensive energy bills and allowing cold air deterring comforts within your house draughts are to be gotten rid of as soon as possible. Hence, those small openings around doors, windows, floors and other places in your house are required to be sealed so that your house becomes energy efficient enough not to require heating to compensate heat loss.
Heaters are operated by fossil fuelled energy that gets burnt up only to give rise to carbon dioxide gases in the air and global warming threats. On the other hand, draught proofing is a relatively inexpensive method and involves lesser amount of money as it can be performed in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) style. Materials used are available easily from any local DIY stores. Homeowners need minimal skills to exercise draught proofing by them. Here is a list of equipment they need to use to fill in different kinds of excluders to draughts –
Checklist of tools
Cleaning solvent
Cold chisel
Rags
Hacksaw
Punch
Hammer
Power drill bits
Caulking gun
Measuring tape/pencil
Now that you are ready with the required tools for draught proofing your house, plan the entire process in following steps –
Step 1 - First you need to find out the source of draughts by observing most probable space around windows and doors. Else, you may use a candle around those suspected areas to locate draughts following flickering flame.
Step 2 – Now, start with sealing those small openings. Choose self-adhesive foam or rubber weather seal to seal those gaps found around door and window frames. Before you seal those gaps, clean the areas and frames of windows and doors otherwise adhesive will not work properly. Confiscate backing papers on the seal and start sealing from the corner of a frame and then press on the area firmly.
Step 3 – When you are draught proofing place under doors, use the special draught excluders that are exclusively available for this area. Before applying measure the width of the door and cut the excluder to length with a hacksaw. Place excluder on the door and then point screw holes. Drill holes a bit smaller than screw gauge and then apply to door.
When you are draught proofing gaps between window or door frames and gaps on walls, get silicone or latex sealant excluders. Clean those gaps found there with stiff brush. Cut the cartridge nozzle in slanted methods and position it using caulking gun. Shove the sealant in the openings ahead of nozzle and remove excess as it is recommended on cartridge.
