Duty gear necessary for bomb disposal squads

As the world changes, the duty gear of security personnel is also bound to change. Conventional warfare where armies of two countries fought each other face to face seems to have bid adieu at the world scene. As war is being fought today by suicide bombers in busy market squares, or in and around top security buildings, and bomb disposal has become the need of the day. This has made bomb disposal equipment an important part of police duty gear.

Bomb disposal related gear has always been a part of military duty gear. It was the gear of police also during war times. But with terrorism making inroads everywhere, bomb scares have become an equally big concern of countries even during peace times. Bomb disposal squads are part of the police force everywhere and they have special duty gear that helps them to dispose bombs without injuring themselves or causing damage to surrounding areas.

Explosive Ordnance disposal, or EOD, suits and helmets are the most common among these bomb related duty gear. These defense armor, also known as ballistic or bomb disposal suit and helmet, are used by police and other security personnel, who have to clear mines, and neutralize explosives. It is designed to prevent the impact of variously sized fragments that could move towards the body at supersonic speed. Blast resistant boots are also an important duty gear of bomb disposal squads. Also known as fragment resistant boots, these boots typically consists of a lighter inner boot and harder outer boot, and will have a high sole, and gaiters extending to knees. There are also blast protection boots that are worn over ordinary shoes.

Bomb blanket is made of layers of ballistic material and is in common use as duty gear of bomb disposal operators. When an object is spotted in a public area that could possibly be an explosive, it is removed by surrounding it with the bomb blanket. If the bomb explodes, the bomb blanket directs the explosion upwards and controls the spreading of shrapnel, by the formation of a vacuum underneath the blanket as a result of explosion. In some instances the unexploded object is first surrounded by what is known as blast containment ring, around which the bomb blanket is placed.

Bomb trolley, bomb basket, and bomb sled are also duty gear items used for removing unexploded objects. Another item that bomb disposal squad policemen carry is remote operated wire cutter. Since they can cut the wires of the IED, or improvised explosive device, from a distance using this, it makes the operation comparatively safe. Water cannons, also known as Percussion Actuated Neutralizer, or PAN, are also used to disable improvised explosives.

Other duty gear items that bomb disposal operators use are, prodders used for detecting mines and booby traps, telescopic manipulators that make picking up of dangerous devices easy, and remotely operated vehicles or ROVs. As terrorists and antisocial elements are gaining more expertise in putting together explosive devices, duty gear items necessary to combat these threats are also growing in number proportionately.

In the same way, when the maintenance end is low, that is, when it is not optimum, the repairs end will be very high.

By: Sunil Punjabi | 16/12/2009 | Hardware
There is a point of view that by training the users a PC technician will be losing work, as the user himself will then handle some of the PC repairs. There is not much truth in this argument. A well-maintained computer will only make the work easier for a PC technician when he is called in for larger problems that will still need his help to be rectified.
