The Colosseum in Rome is one of the first architectural examples of modern day sporting stadiums today including the Texas Stadium, Wrigley Field and Madison Square Garden.  However there is one thing the great Roman Colosseum was missing that all current stadiums carry by law.  When the games ended in the Colosseum massive crowds pushed, shoved and stampeded to get out of the seats to go back to work.  Such hysteria was common place since no formal exit plan was in place.

Today the major stadiums are required by law to have exit signs and lighting to guide people back to their cars.  Many stadiums also find it is in their best interest to have proper exit signs so they can get people out quickly and start the cleanup to reduce costs.  Although sporting events make most the money off the beer, food and souvenirs once the event ends the revenue starts to decline and costs go up as fans loiter in the stadium.  Helping people find their way out allows cleaning crews to start early saving the stadium owners some money.  Lighted exit signs along with proper lighting help people find their way out quickly.

Although current stadiums do a better job of posting exit signs many are looking for more improvements.  Some cities are looking at environmentally friendly signs that last longer, use less energy and require minimal maintenance.  Photoluminescent exit signs that glow in the dark are becoming a very popular alternative to the standard lit exit sign.  In addition to better signs many organizatons are looking for better designs in their next generation stadiums.  Wider walkways that all lead to convenient exits along with signs on the ground, ceiling and both walls are all being considered.  Some teams are even renovating existing facilities with better lighting and exit signs.  Also accessibility for disabled guests is becoming a high priority leading to an increase in ADA Braille signs for bathrooms, exits and information.

In order to keep maintenance cost inline most stadiums consider buying their supplies in bulk to get a lower rate on signs.  Sporting teams usually want to have custom signs with team logos, colors and popular sayings for the current season.  Purchasing custom signage in bulk is definitely a smart approach for the cost conscience manager.  Property managers have been turning to online stores to get a better value and price, along with exceptional customer service.

Even though the Colosseum inspired the large stadiums of today; they are more different from modern coliseums than alike.  If you ever get the chance to visit a modern stadium you will be surprised to see how large they really are and how easy it is to find your seat.  Along with great signs and lighting there are plenty of helpful stadium attendants to point you in the right direction or even escort you to your seat.
