Home security technology may be an important part of protecting your home and loved ones, but it only works when you use it properly. Research shows that home security alarm systems don't always stop professional burglars. Sadly, system failures result more from homeowner oversight than from equipment problems. Homes with security systems are often burglarized because the homeowner forgot to set the alarm or failed to lock critical windows and doors, leaving the home vulnerable to greedy intruders.
Even the most technologically-advanced home security systems on the market today can't protect your home if you don't set the alarm. Murphy's law dictates that the one time you forget to set your security alarm will be the one time a burglar will find his way into your home! And burglars know how important it is to properly shut your windows and doors before you activate your security system. An open window is an open invitation to a hungry intruder.
Your system password is a critical part of your home security system. Choose one that you can remember, but don't choose something so simple that a stranger could figure it out. As many of us have learned the hard way, it's important to remember to deactivate your home security system as soon as you get home. It can be not only embarrassing but expensive to have the police show up only to find that you've "broken in" to your own home. Many law enforcement agencies impose a penalty fee for false alarms. So you could end up having to pay for looking foolish!
It takes little more than 15 minutes for an experienced burglar to rob a house. And while some thieves like to work in teams, most burglars prefer to work alone. Successful burglars do their research first. They won't enter a house they don't know because they don't want to get caught. More likely, the professional burglar will spend time studying your home and family - your habits and routines - to identify the best times to relieve you of your property!
He may watch from the shadows to learn how the home security system works and how to know when you have forgotten to set it. Once he's in your vulnerable house when the home security alarm is off, it's nearly impossible to get caught.
When a burglar trips an alarm system that the homeowner has set properly, he'll flee when the alarm goes off. Most alarms are very loud, and security services contact law enforcement the second they receive a break-in alert. Your frustrated burglar will quickly look for another, easier-to-enter house.
Home security systems with intruder alarms are dependable and good at preventing break-ins. But they're only as good as the person operating them. Be safe. Remember to set your system with a secure password, and be sure to close and lock doors and windows to keep your property and your loved ones safe.
