Reputable home security firms understand that homeowners have questions about their security, including the implementation of a security system that allows the family pet some movement, so for additional questions, homeowners should refer to their local adt security provider. The leader in home security for decades, ADT home security personnel can assist homeowners with any and all home security questions.
In many households across the country, the family dog is as much a part of the family as anyone else. In addition to making great companions, dogs can play an integral role in home security. Regardless of whether homeowners have a 15 pound Jack Russell Terrier or a 90 pound German Shepherd, dogs almost always protect their territory, alerting homeowners when something is amiss, or when a person who has or is approaching their home seems suspicious. Playing such an integral role in home security, homeowners with pets often wonder how their home security system can coexist with the family dog without resulting in the local police paying a visit every time he or she gets up to keep an eye on the squirrels outside, bark at the mailman, or get a drink of water.
Pet immune motion detectors are becoming more and more common, with most major home security system companies offering them as a part of their security networks. Generally speaking, these pet immune motion detectors use passive infrared (PIR) technology. Passive infrared technology senses changes in temperature that occur so quickly, they could not be caused by a rise in room temperature, only by way of a living being (or in other cases, a fire) moving through a room. Pet immune motion detectors allow users to set a baseline for detection that will allow for the changes in temperature caused by a pet moving through a room, but will trigger in the event of a person moving through the room. These sensors do, however, have their limits. With some types of pets weighing as much, and in some cases more than humans, pet immune motion detectors can only ignore pets up to a certain size. Generally speaking, if the family dog weighs more than 60 pounds or so, these detectors will not be able to ignore him or her, as the change in temperature caused by a dog this large is too close to that of a human moving through a room or home. For homeowners with large dogs, other measures will need to be undertaken to accommodate the coexistence of the home alarm system and family pet.
In addition to the availability of pet immune motion detectors, many passive infrared sensors allow for other settings that can assist homeowners in preventing the family pet from inviting the local police over whenever he or she needs some company. Motion placement is one of the easiest ways to allow a pet and security system to coexist, as it involves setting motion detectors in places that burglars would want to go, but that the pet may not have access to during the day. Likewise, pulse counts and beam patterns can be set to avoid the detection of the family pet, while still providing protection against the possibility of an intruder entering the home.
Lastly, and perhaps most easily, is the option for homeowners to give the family pet a portion of the house within which to run free, and a portion, preferably where valuables would traditionally be stored, within which they do not have access when the family is not home. This offers a simple way to balance the need of the family dog to move around a bit during the day, with the home security needs of the entire family.
