Home Security-pool Safety Tips

Did you know that drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children between the age of one and 14 according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 2003 statistics? Nine people drown in the United States every day. (CDC)

More people are getting home swimming pools every day. It is the first thing you notice when you fly into a big city in the southwest or south east for that matter-the number of blue splotches of water in nearly every back yard-representing a potential danger zone.

As you probably know drowning can occur in a heartbeat. It is best to go over these tips before you open your pool for the season. These tips will provide a level of safety and protection for your kids while swimming or playing in the backyard pool.

So here are some common sense swim pool safety tips.

  1. I highly recommend a Red Cross water safety course. The American Red Cross Water Safety Today program teaches easy-to-remember safety tips for pools, spas, water parks, lakes, rivers, oceans and other water features. The FREE course is ideal for parents, youth in grades 4-12, and youth organizations.

  2.

  3. Supervise children at all times. Never permit swimming alone. Never leave a child alone, even to answer the telephone.

  1. Always remove the entire cover from a pool before swimming.

  1. Use common sense.

  1. Have your pool area fenced and the gate locked to prevent unauthorized

entry to the pool and install a gate alarm. Lock and secure all doors in the house

that permits easy access to the pool, and install a door alarm.

  1. Never allow sharp objects, glass or bottles in the pool area.

  1. Some pool companies offer free safety tips. Inquire with yours.

  1. Maintain clean clear water. Do your tests daily.

  1. Install a POOL PROTECTOR POOL ALARM. This is an electronic monitoring system that automatically sounds an alarm when children or pets fall into your unsupervised pool triggering a loud pulsating alarm at the unit and inside your house from the remote receiver.

Follow these tips and you will have a safer swim season in the backyard pool and sleep better at night too.
