How to Assist the Freeze Alarm of your Home

There are plenty of alarms and security measures you can take for your home, but having a freeze alarm is definitely recommended. It is a sophisticated device that monitors the temperature in your home. If the temperature begins to drop too low, it will warn you of the problem. But there are a number of things you can do yourself as well to contribute to the freeze alarm.
Having a freeze alarm is great if you have a vacation home or a place that you are not around at too often. This way you can stay up to date with what is going on at your home without actually being there. But having an alarm to monitor the temperature of the home you stay at is recommended.
The first thing you can do to enhance your freeze alarm is insulate your pipes. By insulating the pipes in your home’s crawlspace and attic, you can better the protection in your home. To get the most out of your insulation job, it is essential that you only use products that have been approved by an independent testing organization.
The next thing you can do is keep the water in your sinks running slightly over night. On extremely cold nights, pipes can easily freeze causing a number of problems. When you keep your faucets running at a trickle, make sure you have warm water on to keep them from freezing.
Another smart idea is to open cabinet doors around the sinks and near appliances. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but by opening the doors you are letting in a lot of warm air to keep the pipes from freezing. This is especially relevant if you have the heat on in your house because the heat will get sucked up into the pipes to maintain warmth.
Lastly, just keep your house as warm as possible. If you have a vacation home, this is not always possible because you are not actually living there. That is where having a freeze alarm comes in handy. But at the home you stay at, you should never have your thermostat any lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Having a freeze alarm can help you maintain a warm and safe environment at your home. But sitting around doing nothing until you receive the bad news from your alarm is a bad idea. Taking the proper precautions listed above will allow you to prevent having to even use the freeze alarm at all.
