Making Your Home More Secure

There used to be a time where home owners felt safe in their house and nobody ever thought about being a victim of burglary, but times have changed and things are completely different.  Crime rates have skyrocketed throughout the years and with the economy the way it is now, more and more people are resorting to theft and a life of crime. Becoming a victim of a burglary is one of the worst experiences that a home owner can have.  On top of having your possessions taken from you, your sense of security is stolen also.  Here are a few simple tips that can help you feel more secure about your home

As simple as it sounds, you should get good locks for your doors.  Add locks to every outside door including the garage, since that is the place that most break-ins start from.  Deadbolts should be a necessary part of your home security plan.  Heavy duty locks like these, if installed properly, will go a long way towards keeping your home safe.  Locks, along with doors that are made to resist break-ins can really prevent someone unwanted to come inside your home.

Make sure all ground floor windows have locks on them also.  A window can easily be broken and climbed through.  Most windows already have some type of locking system, these should be adequate, but if you want to go all out, you can invest in a shatter-proof window or some sort of hard to break window.  Sliding glass doors are easily broken through also. Make sure they are secure and can’t just be wiggled loose.  Newer sliding doors have a built in 3-point locking system which are safer.

All your outside doors should swing inwards towards the house and not outward.  Doors that swing outwards have their hinges on the outside, which can easily be tampered with and removed. Most people don't think about this.  After they have made sure the door has a lock, they usually move onto the next door or window.  If your home actually does have hinges on the outside of the doors, be sure to install a locking pin on each of the doors to deter any thoughts about tampering with it.

Most people think that this could never happen to them; that what they hear on TV and read in the newspaper are just statistics, but they're wrong.  Becoming a victim of burglary can happen to anyone.  In fact, approximately ninety-seven thousand people become victims each day.  Also, that a home without a security system is three times more likely to be broken into.  Make sure you don't end up regretting your decision; take some precautions just in case.
