Police duty gear is not easily definable

Police need exclusive duty gear for each of their different duties like crime investigation, riot control, surveillance, or bomb disposal. Different types of jobs require different types of gear. Jobs like that of a gardener or a housewife may have limited variety in the equipment they use, while others may need a wider variety of tools to complete their requirements. A doctor uses not just his stethoscope, but also involves a variety of surgical instruments, masks, gloves, and machines.

However, no other profession has perhaps such an elaborate duty gear requirement as that of the police and the military/Para-military/armed forces. Even their daily duty gear requirements cover a fairly large array of apparels and tools. The uniform that these professionals wear is specially designed with pockets and pouches to accommodate their knives and lights and guns and ammunition. Then there are their duty belts that store quite a lot, and their holsters, helmets, gloves, and boots. Each of these items comes with various modifications to suit the different jobs that they have to do.

Besides these, police rely on specialized duty gear for different types of jobs. Riot control, bomb dispersal, surveillance, crime detection, are all jobs of the police and for each of this they have to rely on different types of gear. The duty gear of police involved in riot control and mob dispersal are batons, tasers, whips, plastic bullets, pepper spray, water cannons etc. Self-protection is also very important during mob dispersal because lynching by mob is a potential danger when in the midst of a crowd. So, the gear of riot control police will include gas masks and riot protection shields and helmets.

Formerly, bombs were the responsibility of the military. But now that terrorism has dug its tentacles deep into every place, bomb explosions have become a peacetime occurrence also. This has made bomb disposal equipments also a part of police duty gear. Policemen, going to check the areas where suspicious looking objects have been found, need EOD paraphernalia like Explosive Ordnance Disposal helmets and suits. Other things that they require in this connection are fragment resistant boots, bomb disposal trolleys, wire cutters that can be remote operated, bomb baskets, bomb blankets etc.

Crime detection duty gear is another category and will include drug test kits, fingerprinting kits, fluorescent search powders and brushes, evidence markers etc. Police flashlights are also important crime detection duty gear, and allow the users to switch mode and use them as floodlight, spotlight, or in fluorescent colors that can highlight minute objects.

Surveillance cameras, and various communication tools, are part of police duty gear during daily patrols and at crime investigation scenes. All police patrol vehicles will have surveillance cameras, and such cameras are installed by police in high-risk areas to track criminals. Crime investigation duty gear will also involve specialized search equipments like mirrors used for scouting beneath the vehicle without disturbing the fingerprints or other telltale marks that might be there.

Police duty gear items keep on increasing in number and power, together with the unwelcome changes in the ingeniousness of criminals, and the increasing expectations of the public.
