Revisiting Home Security on a Regular Basis Is a Must

Maintaining a home implies constant work in a variety of areas, and few of them (if any) are quite as crucial as the area of home security.  Any responsible home owner ought to know that it is absolutely crucial to periodically check up on the security measures in place at home, even when these appear to be functioning normally and covering the broadest possible array of security concerns.  That’s because not only will certain measures (technological or otherwise) not perform the way they should from time to time, but furthermore there are constant developments in the area of security technologies and ideas that you might very well be missing out on in your home line up.  It’s best to conduct such revisions on the most regular basis possible: instead of once every year or more, consider performing such revisions once every two or three months at most to be able to really boost the security levels at your home.

A thorough security revision is in order here, not just a preliminary check up.  You will want to systematically go over every part of your home in search of potential security liabilities, both from a burglary point of view as well as from a general security point of view (against other threats such as fire and gas hazards).  Start with your home’s exterior, which (if inadequately secured) is where burglars and other criminals will gather their first indicators that yours is a home worth sacking.  To really make this exercise worth the while, you will want to simulate the mentality of a burglar as much as possible; your home security will effectively ride on your ability to think like a criminal, so pay attention to every little detail the way a real burglar would.  A few obvious things to look for would be unsecured doors and windows as well as objects (plants or other) that might conceivably offer a burglar cover to be able to get their work done without being seen.  Less obvious would be tree branches that offer privileged access to higher windows (if you can’t climb it, does that mean that a spry crook won’t be able to climb it either?) or locking mechanisms that can easily be forced open.

This final point is a major home security liability.  Many home owners share the regrettably opinion that any lock is a good lock, yet this is simply not so: experienced burglars have come up with a million and one different ways to force open your doors and many locking mechanisms simply don’t offer an obstacle.  Hence, you will want to make sure that your doors are sufficiently secured with minimum 1-inch deadbolts and locking plates that can’t be jimmied.

Finally, home owners will need to perform this same detailed revision of their home security measures indoors as well, to really assure themselves and their families that safety is present at home, both inside and out.
