Staying Safe at Every Age: Home Security for the Elderly

The issues faced by the aged population of the United States are manifold.  From health care to retirement to savings to grandchildren, senior citizens are confronted with a whole new list of barriers and hurdles after hitting a certain age.  Knowing what to do is tough, and finding guidance is even tougher.  It is difficult not to feel like one is swimming in an entirely new pool with unknown and unexpected fish to fry.

In the midst of these new challenges, it is easy to forget about more basic things, among that list, home security.  Home security is often left by the wayside by elderly people simply concentrating on other things.  Doors are left unlocked and broken windows unrepaired at alarming and dangerous rates.  Senior citizens, who may have lived in certain areas for years, are often overly-trusting and fail to take certain precautions.

Nevertheless, thousands of elderly Americans fall victim to home invasions and attacks each years.  Seen by intruders as often easy and sure victims, they are targeted at extremely high rates.

Here, take a few cues about home security for the elderly to stay safe at any age:
1.  Repair and Replace

Many people live in the same homes for years and years.  This is especially the case with the aged population.  During all of those years, many parts of the house may decay.  Locks may stick, windows may crack, doors may break.  Hire a locksmith to repair and replace all locks and windows are no longer in working order.  Make sure the locks installed are easy to get to and easy to use, too.

2.  Install a Home Security System

This may seem a bit frivolous to some elderly people, but it is not.  Home alarms and home security systems are more affordable and trustworthy than ever and can save lives.  A simple code is all one needs to stay safe at night in bed or when out of the house.  Furthermore, many of these systems may also come accompanied by personal alert systems that prove vital in emergencies such as falls or heart attacks.  Home security systems work against dangers both inside and outside of the home.

3.  Stay Connected

The elderly can be a pretty lonely population.  Those who are retired or live alone may spend days at home without speaking with or seeing anyone, and this can prove a dangerous situation.  That’s why its important for friends and family to constantly check up on the aged.  A simple phone call will do, though a visit is better.  Not only does personal contact ensure the safety of an elderly person, but it also improves morale and mood.

The later years of life should be enjoyable ones.  They will be, too, as long as safety and security is ensured.  Home security is not the most important part of the life of a senior citizen, but it is a part that enables those aspects that are more important to take place.
