Water filters for potable drinking water

Potable, hygienic and clean water is a basic requirement for survival and to lead a healthy life. It is a basic human right. It is very important to filter and purify water before consuming it. Bacteria and viruses spread many fatal and communicable diseases, which are present in untreated water. It is highly advisable to not to directly drink or consume underground water, tap water, water from water bodies like river or ponds. It is recommended to purify the water before using it for consumption purposes. To prevent diseases and illness it is necessary for every house to have its own water purifier or filters.

Water filtration:

Water filtration is a process by which water for drinking, consumption or domestic purposes is treated and cleaned of the unwanted impurities and harmful microorganisms like bacteria and viruses. The type of water purifying process depends upon the quality of water, the purpose for which it is needed, quantity, and the amount of impurities it contains. The best solution to impure water for domestic uses is to install a water purification system at home. These systems can range from simple equipments, which can be directly attached at the mouth of a tap to bigger and complex purifying systems, which uses chemicals like chlorine, biological processes and Ultra violet rays to treat and purify water for human consumption.

Different types of water purifying systems for domestic use:

· Common water filters: these are small sized filter, which are to be attached directly to domestic faucets. They contain granular activated carbon filter. When the water passes, through it cleans the impure water by absorbing the physical impurities, chlorine and chloramines. It also reduces the odour from the water plus makes the taste of the water better.
· Metallic Alloy Filters: these are small sized water filters. They are very affordable and commonly used. These devices are to be attached at the mouth of the domestic water taps. They are generally made from metals or their alloys like copper-zinc alloys. They react with the presence of chlorine in the untreated water and thus filter and purify them.
· Ceramic Filters: there structures contain chambers. The water is passed through the ceramic chambers, which only passes water molecules forward and absorbs all the physical impurities like dirt molecules, bacteria, small stones, debris etc. they just absorb physical impurities and are not efficiently capable of absorbing or eliminating impurities like harmful bacteria and viruses, and chemical impurities present in the water.
Reverse Osmosis filters: these are commonly known as R.O. filters. They contain cleansing membranes inside them. The water is pressurised to pass through these membranes, which absorbs all kinds of impurities at one side, and allows the Pure Water to pass forward. They also apply Ultra Violet rays to kill bacteria and harmful viruses apart from chlorine treatment.
