Chances are that unless you are a building contractor or work in the safety industry, you've spent precious little time ruminating over the importance of your building's exit signs. However I'm going to run down for you several reasons why you need to give this some thought, and how this can lead to increased profitability and safety for your company and employees.
Most exit signs and egress indicators over the last fifty years or so have been hard-wired into your building. Or perhaps, if they were really progressive, they relied on batteries to power them and light your way in the event of an emergency. This was dependent, of course, on whether or not the batteries had a charge when the event occurred, and on whether or not the event in question entirely knocked out your building's power source.
Over the last few years, a new kind of technology has emerged that is not only safer, but is extremely eco-friendly and cost saving. It's the practice of using photoluminescent exit signs as a replacement for the old school types of exit sign as a means of facilitating egress from your buildings in the event of an emergency. These types of exit signs were birthed from a new technology that uses ambient light, stored within photoluminescent signs that have zero energy consumption, zero energy costs, zero maintenance issues, are non-toxic and non-radioactive, and can be moved if your egress paths happen to change.
The cost savings can be enormous. If a typical building owner with 100 incandescent exit signs were to replace these with eco-friendly photoluminescent exit signs, they could realize savings of over $3,500 a year in energy costs, while at the same time realizing the added benefit of reducing air pollution by almost a half a million pounds of CO2 over the life of the product. This is definitely the green way to go!
Think about the maintenance of these lights. Okay, that's long enough, as they are virtually maintenance-free for their life span of 25 years! Unlike the previous generation of exit signs, photoluminescent exit signs require no wiring, no batteries, and no worry. In the event of a calamitous event, they will stay illuminated for several days.
The leader in this space is the company at GloBriteSystem.com, which manufactures a line of photoluminescent exit signs called Glo Brite® Eco Exit™ Signs. These have been named one of the hot products of 2009 by TED magazine, the journal of The National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED), and have received a 2009 Top Products Award from Building Operating Management magazine.
These signs come in various colors, sizes and configurations, with several aesthetically pleasing designs to choose from, and are visible from a distance of 100 feet in darkness and smoky conditions. Making the change to Glo Brite® Eco Exit™ Signs will have an immediate impact on not only your company's bottom line, but will also contribute in a positive way to the environment.
