Home-made Valentines

Making your own valentines can be a tremendously rewarding experience. It is a fun homeschool activity for the whole co-op or just your family. This is much preferable than buying overpriced store bought valentines. Although these valentines come with the images of your homeschoolers’ favorite cartoon characters or movie stars, they have little nostalgic value when compared to the personalization of a home-made card. Once you’ve made all your valentines, you can make a valentine holder using an old shoebox. But I’m getting ahead of myself. First we’ve got to make our valentines.

Rule number one is to use your creative imagination. There are no rules for making valentines. Use a variety of textures, colors, shapes, and sizes. Let your homeschoolers’ creativity run free. Start with a simple piece of red, pink, or white construction paper. Cut these into shapes you like such as hearts or flowers or animals. Then decorate them with whatever craft materials you have on hand like sequins and glitter, crayons and markers, and glue and paint.

Add some interesting flair with pieces of unique fabric, wrapping paper strips, ribbons, string, or stamps. Homeschool students can make collage valentines using images and words cut out of magazines that deal with Valentine themes. If you want to be ambitious, you can make a small pocket for small treats in your card like Hershey’s Kisses.

Be sure to include some Bible verses about love in your cards. These verses will illustrate the love of God for all his children and help keep homeschoolers’ focus on what Valentine’s Day should truly be about.
