How To Bet On Harness Races With a Handicapping System

You probably have already figured out that just betting blindly at the harness track isn't a good idea. And I would hope that you've found a good handicapping system to help you narrow down the contenders. But if you're still not making money at the harness track, maybe it's not the system. Maybe it's how you're playing your picks.

Harness horses run truer to form than thoroughbreds or greyhounds. They're remarkably consistent and durable so it's easier to handicap them than you'd think. As one old-timer told me, "What looks like it'll happen, usually DOES happen with harness races."

This has its good side and bad side. Yes, favorites come in and they're pretty easy to spot. But, on the other hand, they don't always pay very much. This means that you really have to pay attention to your percentages if you want to go home with more money than you came with.

Because the margin is so low on payoffs, you have to hit a higher percentage of bets than you would, say, at the dog track or the thoroughbred track. Boxing four horses just doesn't work as well as boxing four dogs does at the dog track. Keying is a much better way to bet, especially with trifectas.

Of course, this means that you have to be able to really narrow it down to which horse has the best chance of winning, not just to which couple of horses will be in the quiniela. And, speaking of quinielas, exactas are much more profitable at the harness track.

If you're serious about making money at the harness track, first get a good system. Then, be very conservative with your bets so that you're focusing on the horses that have a much better chance of winning than any other horse in the race.

Pass on races where you have doubts and only play the ones where you really feel that your handicapping is solid. This is the only way to make money at the harness track consistently, over the long run.

If you try to pick the winner in every race and back that pick with a wager, you will go home a loser more often than not. That is why when you go to a horse racing facility and keep your ears open, you will hear this question repeated over and over: "Who do you like?" Yet a far better question for them to ask would be, "Which horse should I bet?" To quote a Las Vegas professional, "Picking winners doesn't mean anything."
