One of the myths about horse racing is that popular jockeys, the ones who win a lot of races, don't bring in long shots. Some people think that you have to bet on horses ridden by low percentage jockeys or jockeys that are seldom seen, in order to cash big tickets on longshots.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. While a long priced horse is occasionally put in the winners circle by a no name rider, the majority of longshots are ridden by the top riders in the riding colony. If you don't believe this, start keeping a list of the reins men who pilot long priced horses at your favorite track. The results may amaze you.
While you are keeping lists, you might also want to keep track of which trainers never seem to win with a big favorite. In fact, it is a good idea to keep a record of the range of odds that each of the top trainers win at. While some win with horses at all odds, there are some who only seem to win at certain odds.
It may not always be that they win with big longshots, but some just don't seem to win with horses at low odds or high odds. Before you think I am accusing these conditioners of grand larceny, I am not. There can be many reasons for this and one of them is that the trainer just doesn't get the recognition he or she deserves and the public doesn't respect that trainer's ability to bring home a winner.
On the other hand, there are some trainers who just do not win with horses at really low odds, or who win with them, but not as often as they should based on the horses merits. he same is often true of jockeys. There are some jockeys who are known as stiff jockeys because they are known for stiffing a favorite.
But before you go proclaiming a rider a stiffer, be sure you are right. Sometimes a rider is just going through a spell of bad luck, it happens to all of us, jockeys, too. Keeping notes for an entire season at your favorite track(s) however, will confirm who brings home the favorites and who does not.
Just think of what you can do with that information. You will know when to bet the next best contender in the race when another horse is taking most of the action because you will be fairly certain the horse will come up short. In other words, you will be in the know. Let's face it, in the real world of racing or business, it is the ones in the know who make most of the money.
Knowing longshot jockeys, and trainers who fail with favorites will help you to make money betting on horse races, just like the rest of the people who are in the know.
