Paddock Notes for Good Horse Racing Handicapping and Successful Bets
If you are fortunate enough to be able to visit the race track, rather than just betting from an OTB or online, then by all means, go and enjoy the spectacle and opportunity to make some notes and do some horse spotting. Horse spotting is nothing other than looking at the horses and estimating each ones fitness and energy level.
Before the race and post parade, go to the paddock and saddling ring and watch the horses and people tending them, you may spot something very helpful. If you are following a specific horse or a trainer's horses, you may notice that a horse is racing with a tongue tie or nasal strip that it wasn't wearing before. A tongue tie can turn a quitter into a winner and yet, they are not listed in the equipment changes.
I personally think they should be listed because they do make a very big difference for some horses. How will you know that a horse is wearing a tongue tie when it wasn’t wearing one before? The only way to have this information is to keep notes. I know what you're thinking, you don't want to have to keep notes about every horse, but keeping track of some well bred horses that are just starting out is a great way to make good bets.
The reason is that the trainers are just learning about the horse and trying to figure things out and try new things. If they put a tongue tie on a horse and exercise it and see improvement, you can bet it will be wearing the tie in its next race. Who will know about? The trainer and insiders at the track, that's who. They will also be the ones cashing tickets after the race.
If you are smart and sharp enough to spot the tongue tie on the young horse, then you may be cashing a good ticket along with them.
There are other ways to use paddock notes, too. You can notice how enthusiastic the trainer and jockey appear, or how listless they appear. If they seem to think their horse has little chance, and sometimes you can spot it in their body language, then why bet the horse?
The horse itself may also let you know what its chances are by its body language. Learning to read the body language of a horse is one skill any serious handicapper should develop. All the information in past performances is just that, in the past. It only tells you how the horse fared in the past, but looking at the animal in the flesh right then and there will tell you if it is on the muscle, tucked up, washy, sharp, or any other number of things that will affect its performance.
The point is that paddock notes, both of the horse in this race and its last race, give you a big edge over many other bettors. It also lets you compare the horse's condition to see if it is improving or declining. When your winning edge is only a few percentage points to begin with, a few notes and a bet here or there can be the difference between making a profit or losing money betting on horse races.

Barrel horse racing is a rodeo horse racing event and just like other equestrian competitions requires a lot of preparation and hard work in advance. Caring properly for your barrel horse race saddles and exercising your horse are just two of them.

Many horse racing enthusiasts like to place bets on the ante-post market. For big races the bookmakers will often start accepting bets as much as a year before the actual race dates. The big advantage of this for the punter is that they can normally get much bigger odds than they would nearer the date.
If you look at any race card you will see if a horse is wearing any type of headgear. The more common types of headgear worn by race horses are Blinkers, Visor and Cheek Pieces. Another addition to a horses headgear is a tongue strap.
In UK horse racing all jockeys have to be licenced by The British Horse Racing Board. Most would be flat race jockeys join a racing stable when they are in their mid teems. At one time nearly all apprentice jockeys were boys but in recent years an increasing number of girls have also have become apprentice jockeys. It is also fair to say that the girls are also having considerable success in what was once a male dominated sport.
Have you ever stopped to wonder why you have not made a fortune from your horse racing activities? If the advertisements for all those horse racing and tipster systems are to be believed it is really easy. "Make £50,000 a year" or "The last losing horse I tipped was ridden by Lady Godiva". So why after having bought some of these systems are you still not winning?
You may have seen a jockey shifting his or her weight from side to side as his or her mount came down the stretch while you were watching a horse race and wondered what was going on. It was something you should have noted. Part of good horse racing handicapping is being observant and profiting from the little things you notice. What was happening was that the rider was trying to get the horse to switch leads.
While many people try to learn how to handicap horse races well enough to make a profit, many people never realize that goal. One of the problems is that it is very difficult to do. Another part of the problem is that there are so many bets available and so much conflicting information. Some pundits will tell you that exotic bets are the best way to go if you want to make money betting on horses. Others say stick with the basic win bet.
Because horse racing is a sport that takes place out doors, it is subject to the weather and all the variations of weather we get here in the US. It may be torrential rains in the South or Blizzards in the North or any combination of weather in between. This presents a real challenge to horse racing handicappers who have to figure out how to handicap a race on an off track.
Since most of the horse races you will encounter during any meet at almost any track will be claiming races, it is a good idea to focus your efforts on them and to master them if at all possible. But claiming races do have their own special sets of challenges, so it is a good idea to think about what characteristics are common in claiming races.
The whole point of betting on horses is obviously to make a profit. Therefore, since you are betting against the crowd in pari-mutuel betting, you have to be able to place a fair odds value on a horse and do a better job of estimating a horse's fair odds. It sounds simple, but is diabolically difficult, which is the reason that horse racing handicapping is such a tough way to make money. So just how do you make money betting on horses?
If you are like most people, you will have good days and bad days betting on horses. Horse racing handicapping is an art and not a science and that may be why we seem to have good days and bad days. The more consistent you are, the better your chances of making money on the races. Therefore, figuring out which races to bet on or even which days to bet on races, is important.
As someone who has taught a lot of people the art of handicapping horse races, I am often asked for tips. While I don't give tips on individual races, I am willing to offer some general advice that can produce more winners and fewer losing tickets. These tips are the top three that I have learned in a lifetime of playing the races and owning horses. Some people may disagree with the order of them or perhaps think of more important ones, but of course, that is just a matter of opinion
There are few thrills in life equal to handicapping a horse race and picking a winner. Seeing the horse that you personally picked and bet on coming down the home stretch in front will certainly get your heart pumping and it is good for the wallet, too. Just betting on the favorite or a horse because it is pretty is all right if that is all you want to do and you aren't concerned with making money betting on horse races, but if you want to try a little harder and have more than a few winners,
