Dublin Guest Houses

Guest houses in Dublin are generous with their hospitality and it’s a good idea to arrange somewhere to stay before you actually arrive.  If you are planning to sample a pint of Guinness® or to do some shopping in Grafton Street or Henry Street, then choosing a bed and breakfast has to be at the top of your list.

There is plenty to do and see in Dublin, the capital of Ireland and also it’s largest city.   It really comes to life in the evening when there is an exciting nightlife to enjoy.  Dublin is reputed to have around half of it’s inhabitants under the age of 25.

Temple Bar is the best known area for night life located south of the River Liffey, which has become a popular haunt for visitors and party goers; a good place to get you first taste of Guinness’s dark beverage! The narrow cobbled streets have plenty of restaurants, shops and night spots.

People come from afar to savour the music in Dublin’s night clubs and pubs, traditional and modern dance stuff is all here and accommodation at a bed and breakfast is popular.

There are two well known cinemas in the city centre, the Savoy and Cineworld, excellent retreats in inclement weather! The Bank of Ireland and Christ Church Cathedral are also in the city centre.

You’ll not be able to resist for long a visit to the Guinness® Storehouse to learn about the 250 year history of the company and here, in the Gravity Bar, the highest bar in Ireland, you’ll be able to get your second taste of this famous brew!  Try to find a guest house as close as possible .

Trinity College was founded by Queen Elizabeth in 1592 where the Old Library and Book of Kells can be found.  Oliver Goldsmith and Samuel Beckett were students at the college.

There are plenty of museums and exhibitions to see in the city, such as Dublinia which traces the history from around 1100 to the closure of the monasteries in 1540 and includes a model of the town as it was in 1500.

Pop in to Kilmainham Gaol, Irelands best known but disused prison to see where the leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916 were executed by the English.

Dublin Castle, commenced in 1208, was the English power base in Ireland for over 700 years and some of the city’s oldest architecture is on view here.

By this time, you’re probably in need of some refreshment, so how about a trip to The Old Jameson Distillery?  You can see for yourself what’s involved with the malting and distilling of this famous whiskey and then have a little ‘taster’.   Just the job before returning to your guest house!

Perhaps, next day, go to Merrion Square, one of Dublin’s grandest Georgian squares, and visit The National Gallery of Ireland that shows Irish landscape artwork and portraits together with a wide range of other European paintings.

Then take the weight off your feet and relax in St. Stephen's Green. This is a beautiful park covering some 22 acres laid out in it’s present form in 1880.   The bandstand is the focal point of the park but there are trees, flower beds, shrubs, a fountain and lake together with memorials to some of Dublin’s prodigal sons.

Then, you must see Christ Church Cathedral located in the centre of the city for well nigh a thousand years, with a history going back to the time of the Vikings and the Anglo-Normans. The church and architecture attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world.

These suggestions for things to do and see in Dublin are just for starters and only scratch the surface of what’s on offer here, for the city is a diverse and exciting place to visit at any time.  So arrange your bed and breakfast in advance of your arrival and take your time to enjoy yourself when you get here.  You will never tire of Dublin nor of it’s famous ‘dark stuff’!
