Fado Houses

Fado is almost the national music form of Portugal. Fado music portrays the sad aspects of life including love, separation, nostalgia, homesickness and similar moods. Fado is presented in several Lisbon cafes and fado houses. In fact, Lisbon is the only city in Portugal where fado tradition has flourished the most since the ancient times.

Faia

Faia is probably the most popular fado house in Lisbon. It has been providing fado along with rich and varied Portuguese food for the past half a century. The original owners of Faia, Lucília do Carmo or Carlos do Carmo, were themselves famous fado singers.

Adega do Machado

Adega do Machado is the oldest fado house in Lisbon. Though it has become more commercial, it still seems alive to the presence of the souls of the old fado poets that sang here.

Café Luso

Café Luso is situated in the old coach houses and cellars of the S. Roque Palace. It is one of the lucky buildings in Lisbon that survived the 1775 devastating earthquake. You can see the original 17th centurial vaults in the café. Café Luso also presents theatrical performances along with fado. It was here that the famous fado singers such as Amália Rodrigues and Tony de Matos began their singing career

Live Music Theatres

Lisbon offers some of the best live music theatres representing the European and African music traditions. Some of the popular theatres are B. Leza, Bugix, Catacumbas Jazz Bar, Doca de Santo, Hard Rock Café, Hot Clube de Portugal, Paradise Garage and Speakeasy.
