The concept of the Motel was developed in America, in 1925. The word is a combination of motor and hotel. Motels are usually located along the highway and interstate, and are most frequently stayed at by motorists who are tired and too weary to continue driving. The cost of staying at a motel is low and reasonable, and accommodations are minimal and basic. Most motels have televisions in the rooms and air conditioning. Some motels lack cable television service or offer it for additional costs. Expanding highways further fueled the development of the motel concept during the 1920’s. Most motels share a common design in which the building is in the shape of an "I", a "U", or an "L".
There are several different types of rooms that a motel can provide. Some rooms are connected with a door in between the room, which allows inhabitants to visit with neighbors. There are also rooms that have two beds, which are called double rooms. The cost of a room increases with the bed size provided. Smoking and non smoking rooms are one of the features available to guests. Rooms in a motel usually face the parking lot, and have a window through which you can see the parking lot. Some motels have room safes where you can store valuables.
Nowadays there are motels that offer long term stays with rates for a week or a month. Motels do not offer room services besides daily cleaning and clean towels. Toiletries like soap, razors, toothbrushes, and toothpaste are usually available for free. Some Motels Feature a Restaurant or serve continental breakfast. Motels do not rank with the five star hotel ranking system. If a person were to assign a star ranking to a motel, half a star or less would be appropriate. Motels rarely have an elevator and rarely have more than two floors of rooms. Some motels do have pools.
