La Manga Golf Resort

La Manga Golf Resort was conceived in the early 1970 by an American, Greg Peters, who wanted to introduce to Spain the successful concept of a fully integrated golf and leisure resort, a concept already very popular in the USA. It was certainly one of the first resorts in Spain alongside Sotogrande further south in Andalucia. The main avenue of the resort is called “Avenida Gregory Peters” and is a constant reminder for visitors of its founder.

Greg Peters managed to pool together a small number of investors in Spain, Europe and America to purchase the land, 1400 acres in all. La Manga Golf Resort was founded in 1972, the golf courses were quickly established and a small number of apartments, villas and a small 40 room hotel were built alongside.

The land had been previously used as lemon groves and cereal crops and had the benefit of half a dozen artesian wells which provided sufficient water for irrigating the 2x18 hole golf courses and the small number of properties. La Manga Golf Resort soon became the best known golfing venue in Spain and hosted the Spanish open twice in the mid seventies.

Arnold Palmer was the winner one year when he birdied the 18th hole of the south course. A plaque commemorating the event still stands on the 18th tee as a reminder of the occasion which firmly put La Manga Golf Resort on the European golfing map and made the resort the most famous venue for golf competitions in Spain at that time.
