UK weekend breaks are becoming more popular as people 'staycation' at home and visitors from abroad flock to Britain to take advantage of the weak pound. If you fancy a trip to the seaside, cast any preconceptions you have aside and try a jaunt to the quirky town of Blackpool.
Blackpool is still the nation's most popular beach resort, attracting more than 10 million visitors a year, and is popular with families, young people and couples alike - it's perhaps not the most fashionable place to visit, but for a weekend break in the UK packed full of good old-fashioned fun, it's a great choice.
Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside
A trip to the seaside, kids in tow trailing plastic buckets and spades, is the classic image of a UK Weekend Break - and what could be more fun on a sunny bank holiday weekend? Blackpool has seven miles of award winning beaches, including the 'Golden Mile' a stretch of sand on the promenade in the town centre, which is constantly being improved upon in order to give visitors the best possible experience. Donkeys march gamely up and down the sands to give children a 10-minute ride - a sight which Blackpool is certainly famous for.
Equally famous is the Blackpool tower - if you drive in from the motorway you can see it miles into the distance. Though not quite as impressive as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is an icon in the UK and is an attraction inside as well as out - home to a circus and a stunning ballroom, it's fun for all the family. If you have no fear of heights you can take the lift to the top and try out the 'walk of faith', a clear glass floor right at the very summit.
Of course, if you have children and plan a weekend break to Blackpool, they will talk non-stop about a visit to sprawling theme park The Pleasure Beach. With 125 rides and attractions it's truly a magical place for young ones and for adults too - there are some fearsome white knuckle rides including the Pepsi Max Big One, which at one point was the tallest rollercoaster in Europe.
A Quintessentially British Experience
UK weekend breaks don't have to be about rushing around, taking in all manner of attractions - if the thought of being hurtled around on a rollercoaster doesn't appeal to you, you can slow down the pace and enjoy the quite side of Blackpool. Enjoy some fish and chips on the promenade, take a horse and carriage ride or go for a snooze in a deckchair, and revel in your quintessentially British experience.
